The European Parliament is launching its own four-channel TV station this week, at a cost of €9 million (£7 million) a year.
Europarltv aims to make the 785-member parliament “as transparent and understandable as possible to European citizens” by broadcasting in 22 languages on the internet. MEPs voted the money for the project because they were concerned that too little of their work was being shown on the existing EU-subsidised internet service, Europe By Satellite, which broadcasts only selected debates and speeches.
Europarltv will have one channel entirely devoted to live coverage of events in the chamber in Brussels or Strasbourg, the two sites of the European Parliament.
Another of the four channels will be devoted to programmes for schools. More than a third of the budget will be eaten up in translation services, providing voice-overs or subtitles.

John, Edinburgh,
Wow, a channel devoted to live coverage of events in the chamber, and with subtitles or translation. With the number of languages spoken in the EU, I guess it means a whole new building just to house the translators and sub-titlers. More of our money wasted; time to get out of this cash drain.
Ron, Milton Keynes, UK
A link to this Europarltv, please? You seem to have forgotten that bit.
Simon, Brentwood, UK
Anyone who thinks these TV channels will pump out anything other than lies and misleading propaganda is living on another planet. And whats worse is that poor old bankrupt Britain will be the ones paying for it.
steve, swansea, uk
Seems a reasonable idea although no one will watch. I suggest cutting the number of MPs to 400 and stop the move of the parliament between brussels and strasbourg each year to pay for it.
Neil Murphy, cromer,
When are they going to sign and publish the Euro accounts?
simon, blackburn, uk
Ah, soon we too can see the builders working on the ruined chamber in Strasbourg. And all for the bargain price of a few million Euros. And to think something better could be done with that, such as not taking the money off people to start with...
