The great blackout: help us beat the censors and leave your comments in the form below
20.58 NH What a day. Some have suggested that what was left to be published today after the weeks of grim revelations was just scraps. But if anything, the pathetic sight of these censored documents, redacted beyond recognition, will be the defining image many are left with after the whole episode. If it wasn't for the leak, this is what the MPs would have let us see.
20.35 NH Elliot Morley, possibly the only MP who could face a custodial sentence for fraud, has announced that he will repay another £20,000. That is on top of the £16,800 he has already returned. Dear me, has he not enjoyed the past month?
20.18 NH Ann Coffey has given back exactly £500, Parmjit Dhanda £349 and Mike Weir returned £37.08. With so much information now in the public domain it will be well into tomorrow before we make sense of most of these claims and returned claims.
20.09 NH So, did you know that Paul Flynn had repaid £135.50, Desmond Swayne £60.66 and Andrew George £2915.90?
19.36 NH Most of the names on the list are the familiar stars of the expenses scandal including Douglas Hogg, Anthony Steen, Elliott Morley and Rosie Winterton. I'm scrolling through now looking for newies - will let you know.
19.26 NH The list prepared by the Members Estimate Committee includes about 200 (oh I just changed this from 50 - now I don't know - we're recounting - this list is confusing) MPs who, between them, have returned just under half a million pounds.
19.03 NH I do hope expenses list fatigue has not overwhelmed you because BREAKING NEWS we have more: This list shows the members who have re-paid money since the expenses scandal began.
18.48 NH MPs' expenses are officially top of the hit parade. The latest figures show that clicks on the roll-call of shame have reached 1.4 million since shortly before 6am today. That breaks down as 247,541 unique visitors - so very nearly a quarter of a million different people have decided to go and have a look at their MPs' expenses claims for themselves. Does that count as a great day for democracy or an awful day?
18.43 NH Hugo Swire, or at least one of his researchers, has leapt into action after reading my post of 17.03. Team Swire are also good enough to point out one of his luxurious claims that I had overlooked - "4/11/05 replacement orchid plant" (p109). Mr Swire said this evening: "The orchid was bought as an office plant." The demise of the original orchid remains a mystery.
Then he comes to the chi-chi leather manbag that carries his laptop. "In reviewing my expenses since 2004 I was reminded I had claimed £395.00 for a leather computer bag out of office costs," he said. "Whilst the bag was authorised by the Fees Office and is in every day use I felt on reflection it may be deemed extravagant. I therefore thought it best if I reimbursed the Fees Office for the total amount which I did in May of this year. I was not asked or instructed to do this."
18.23 NH Vince Cable tonight criticised the failure to reveal more information. “The publication of the expenses in this format has only made people even more frustrated,” he said of the heavily redacted forms.
