Minnesota - Republican convention in St Paul, Minnesota. Opens with
keynote speech from President Bush before John McCain’s acceptance of the
Republican Party nomination on September 4.
Brussels - Emergency summit of European Union leaders in Brussels will
discuss how to respond to Russia’s military action in Georgia. Despite
pressure for the EU to impose economic or trade sanctions this is thought
unlikely.

Nicosia - Following the July 1 agreement that Cyprus should, in principle,
have a single sovereignty and citizenship, talks open in Nicosia between
Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders, aimed at reunification.
New York - Trial opens in New York of Aafia Siddiqui, US-trained
Pakistani scientist, accused of al-Qaeda membership and shooting an American
soldier.

Vienna - The Nuclear Suppliers Group meets in Vienna to give India a
waiver that would allow it to import atomic energy technology without
signing the Non-Proliferation Treaty.
5:
Zambia - Zambia’s ruling Movement for Multiparty Democracy picks its
presidential candidate after the death of President Levy Mwanawasa. His
successor will influence the Southern African Development Community’s
handling of Zimbabwe.
Australia - Australia’s first female Governor-General is sworn in.
Quentin Bryce, the former governor of Queensland, will replace Major-General
Michael Jeffrey.
Angola - Angola parliamentary elections (the first in 16 years) open
the way for a presidential poll in 2009. President dos Santos first
announced his intention to hold a ballot in 2004.

Pakistan - Pakistani presidential elections following the resignation on
August 18 of President Pervez Musharraf.
Beijing - Paralympics start in Beijing. Authorities in Lhasa are
expected to try those accused of Tibetan riots in March (until September
17).
Yerevan - Turkey and Armenia will play their World Cup qualifier
despite rancour over Turkey’s failure to accept claims that 1.5 million
Armenians suffered genocide by Ottoman Turks.
7:
Hong Kong - Hong Kong votes for a new legislature. A surge in
post-Olympic nationalism could boost the chances of pro-Beijing candidates
over the city’s democrats.
8:
Las Vegas - The trial opens in Las Vegas of O. J. Simpson, who is accused
of leading a group of men who stormed the Palace Station hotel and casino
and seized memorabilia at gunpoint.
10:
Malaysia - Anwar Ibrahim, the Malaysian opposition leader, is due in
court charged with sodomising his former male aide in a case that is seen by
many as politically motivated. Mr Ibrahim, who won a recent by-election, has
vowed to topple the Government of the Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

KwaZulu-Natal - The South African High Court, sitting in
Pietermaritzburg, will rule on whether Jacob Zuma, leader of the ruling
African National Congress party and likely successor to President Mbeki,
should be tried for corruption.
16:
Baghdad - General David Petraeus hands over command of US forces in Iraq
to General Raymond Odierno.
Bangkok - The Supreme Court in Thailand is expected to pass judgment on
Thaksin Shinawatra, the former Prime Minister, who is accused of illegally
helping his wife to buy land worth £1.5 million at a discounted price from a
government agency in 2003.
17:
Israel - The ruling Kadima Party will choose a leader to replace Ehud
Olmert. Tzipi Livni, the Foreign Minister, is tipped to succeed. A run-off
election will be held on September 25.
