Science The British Association Festival of Science opens in Liverpool. Professor Sir David King, formerly the Government’s chief scientist, will deliver the presidential address on science and sustainability.
Politics The first elected leader of the Green Party will give a maiden speech to the party conference in London. Caroline Lucas, MEP, is running against Ashley Gunstock, a former star of The Bill. Until now the party has elected two Principal Speakers (a man and a woman).

Unions The TUC conference opens in Brighton. Meanwhile, Gordon Brown will chair the first meeting of the Cabinet since July, before making a private speech to the TUC General Council the following day.
