The movie of the Marvel comic has been released with great fanfare, and the spin-off game is more ambitious than many superhero capers. You play billionaire industrialist Tony Stark – aka Iron Man – who has invented a suit of high-tech armour that enables him to fly and battle baddies.

The game is at its best in the open spaces of a desert or the hills of an unnamed eastern European state, where the destruction is epic in scale. The ability to catch and then return missiles to their sender never gets dull. However, the first few levels are humdrum, the controls are unintuitive and key animations are repeated ad nauseam. Overall this superhero’s suit is shiny, but the joints have seized up with rust.
