“Well, what do you know,” says engadget.com. "Turns out the iPod touch is a reality after all.”
In the wake of rumour solidifying into fact, a pattern has emerged on the blogs' coverage of Apple's latest gadget: the blog authors give upbeat appreciations of what the iPod touch offers, the commentators on their sites bewail its shortcomings.
And so Crunchgear furnished readers with a glowing précis of what you get for your money (£199 for an 8GB version; £269 for a 16GB):
“Want more iPod? We’ve got you more iPod,” it said.
“For months and months we’ve been hearing rumours of a full-screen, touch-sensitive iPod, we’ve called it the iPhone without the phone part. Everyone’s wanted it, and now they’ve got it. Steve rolled out the latest iPod today, starting an entirely new class of iPods called the iPod Touch, and it’s exactly what it should be.”
“Available in a few weeks, the Touch comes in 8GB and 16GB configurations, and is basically a phoneless iPhone. Same basic form factor, same motion-sensing screen turning, same multitouch, same Coverflow browsing, same WiFi, and same Safari. Yah, the amazing mobile Web implementation that Apple brought to the iPhone without signing up for AT&T.
“But the WiFi’s not just for Web browsing. You also get the iPhone’s YouTube playback. You also get a wireless iTunes music store. Find a hotspot, find your song, and buy it, just as you would through your desktop iTunes. As Stevie J said, ‘Apple’s going to do with WiFi what others have failed to do.’ That looks likely.”
So far, so good. Turn, however, to the comments from the great unwashed on the Think Secret site, and another story unfolds.
“I know the iPod Touch is cool looking but [without] a 60 gig drive it is worthless to me,” says one comment.
“One thing that is conspicuously missing from the iPod touch (as well as the iPhone) is any sort of games. One would think that the touch-screen platform would be perfect for something like bejeweled or solitaire. Seems odd to me, and is one of the few features missing from the iPhone that most other cell phones have,” adds another.
A third drawback: “No Mail! WTF! That's all I can say,” says one disgruntled commentator on tuaw.com. “There's Safari [Apple's web browser] but no Mail!? I don't get it.”
On Times Online, too, most commenters were sceptical. "Instead of introducing new iPods, Apple should support the thousands (millions?) of broken iPods out there," one reader says. "My iPod Mini died in August, just 5 months after the warranty expired. So did many other iPod Minis of the same vintage. But Apple refuses to recognize this as an 'event'. Their Tech Support suggested that I purchase a new one."
And so it was left to the bloggers and not their public to sing the device's praises.
AppleInsider said that “Apple [had] catered to the demands of iPod users worldwide” in building the iPod touch.
“With its 3.5-inch widescreen display, iPod touch is ideal for watching movies and TV shows, as well as viewing photos and album art.
“The player also features a built-in accelerometer that automatically senses when you rotate it into its landscape position, just like iPhone.
“When you're in music, it automatically switches to Cover Flow so you can browse your music collection by album cover artwork with just a flick of a finger. When in Photos, it automatically displays the photo in its landscape aspect ratio; and when in Safari it displays the web page horizontally.”

Wifi is the way forward - in that sense I think the iphone is a fantastic idea. That said, I do not agree that apple products are in any way better than their competition. eg I haev a creative zen stone plus - way better than the daft-looking ipod nano/shuffle.
Good idea - but wait for the better implemented and reasonably priced rival products.

If youre whining that the iPod touch doesn't have enough memory, buy a HD based iPod with 160GB drive. Go & search & see how much flash based memory is. Have you even checked? It's cost prohibitive to put anymore than 16GB in this device & keep it at a reasonable price point that people would pay. They probably could give it 32GB but then it would cost $600+. Would you pay that for an MP3 player? Nope, neither would I.
The difference in price between the UK & the US is partly based on the fact that the UK price has VAT included. The US price you still have to add on state taxes, & the exchange rate changes, it's not static.
If they made it with other features, you would still get people complaining that they 'needed' something else it didn't have. You are not going to please everyone.
If you don't like it, don't buy it. Apple still makes the best devices of their kind.
Ollie, London, UK
Sounds like what some people want is the IPhone or a different mobile phone. You want games get a PSP or DS Lite.
Eventually the ultimate mobile device be available. With every conceivable function. We're pretty close already. My Japanese 3G mobile is a camera, video camera, browser, email, game machine, audio player, clock and probably some other things too, and it works internationally. Some phones are TVs as well.
Tim, Yokohama, Japan
Yep - I'm another addict whose Ipod Mini crashed just after the warranty expired. "Buy a new one" was also the advice I got, which I did, of course. There should be a new marketing term for us "resentfully loyal"...
David, Winterthur, Suisse,
The iPod-touch may not have a mail app, but it has mail capability through web mail. You can send email if you logon to web mail in Yahoo, Hotmail, Apple's .mac, Google, or any other. The same way you can receive email. After all the iPod-touch has a virtual keyboard.
Rodolfo Don, Kent, WA, United States
Its a lot of money for 16Gb, especially when an 80Gb "classic" video IPOD is a lot less.
Apple should have looked at the rivals in the market (primarily Archos) at how a handheld media device should be. The reviews also state whether users will have issues with needing to re-encode video onto the device (rather than just placing the movie on there and having the device scale it for you).
Games, e-mail etc aside - It's missing a whole set of features. It would have been great if it had an FM tuner and microphone & voice recorder also. Support for other video and audio formats too.
Peter, Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK
Totally agree with everyone - not worth buying with such a small capacity. But it's typical Apple, bring out a new model and everyone buys it then a few months later bring out the same model with a larger capacity. I am waiting for 80GB or so. My iPod Mini is unreliable too, so would love some decent competition from another company...
Mark, Tokyo, Japan
I'm very sceptical about apple nowadays.
I had 40gig ipod. This worked fine up until the beginning of this summer. For some reason after downloading the latest itunes/ipod software it decided to go into meltdown.
After taking it to a apple store and having it checked out, it was found to need a new hard drive...very strange.
It seems to me that when apple up-dates it itunes every so often as simple quick download files, they possibly have the ability to make the new software incompatible with older models. To the point where they might be able to programme the software to screw up your old ageing ipod.
Then you call or ask a apple shop person - oooopppss sorry its out of warranty, you just need to buy the latest, newest , funkiest ipod £269.00 please mmmmmmmm.
Sounds weird but is that why there's no many unhappy ipod/nano owners around the world.
Simon Nicholls, London, United Kingdom
just why cant other big guys like sony, phillips cant make a device as cool and as simple as ipod..its beyond me!

"The age of disposable technology"
I agree with the above complaint of age of item vs gratification time of the item"
i think we should have a complaint centre for the new
world of 'disposable computer accessories'
the people of this decade do not have unlimited funds for
buy it now and kiss it goodbye 1 day after the warranty
expires!!!!
my 15 year old son's laptop fried just 1 month and 1 year old
and BEST BUY IN TORONTO CANADA MADE HIM/ME
Buy a lap top to be used an loaner and after 3 months of back and forth fix, made us take a replacement but buy a new extended warranty (we only use 15 months of 24 months extended warranty originally purchased)
if every major city in the world had the people with 'just after warranty' items returned on 1 day during the year and refuse to leave the APPLE Store without satisfaction, that would be
a brilliant move!!! So its possible in Toronto Canada, New York, London, Los Angeles
Suzanne Marcus, Toronto, Canada
I am disappointed that Apple omitted PDA functionality like address book, personal information manager, calendar , notes and e-mail. With all these and web browsing, minus mobile phone capability, the Ipod Touch would have been truly a very useful device.
Sajjad Khaliq, Huddersfield, England
Are you all kidding? This will change everything... again. No hard drive? Fantastic! No hard drive to crap out and die. No email? Every hear of Gmail or Hotmail or Yahoo Mail on your web browser? You might even get lucky and have a corporate email system with a portal that lets you get into your mail with a web browser so that argument goes down in flames. I'm in education and I see students doing research from their iPod Touch in the hallways of their WiFi enabled school and not tying up school computers. The possibilities are endless. And unless you need to carry around every favourite movie you ever owned along with your entire MP3 collection you shouldn't really need too much more than 16 gigs. If you do there's the iPod Classic. If you need more than 16 gigs then just wait a few months for the 32 gig version that's bound to come out as ram prices drop. The lowest price I can find for a 16gig flash drifve is $199 CDN so the price of $449 for an Itouch is not too bad.
Sean Vedell, Hamilton , Ontario
I'm very, very, very disspointed! I was under the impression the IPOD touch would be a hefty drive then then the measily 16gb. I dont know aboy anyone else but I need at least 60gb's. And why the hell would you get an IPOD touch when you can just get the Iphone?
Najeeb, Chicago, IL
What a HUGE disapointment 16 GB in memory is just not even close to what you need for a decent music collection. Consider the classic iPod that has a capability of 160 GB (ten times larger) this is a waste of time.
I think they are limiting the memory so they will not hurt the iPhone sales but once again it is a huge disapointment with that tiny memory.
I am going to wait for the new model that will have larger memory (most likely for Christmas)!!!!!!
lclaros, Boston, MA
The iphone would be fantastic if it had more memory, but the thing that is often unnoticed is that it has no camera either.
Patrick m, Indianapolis,
Speaking as an old geezer whose first computer had 32k of memory and data storage on a cassette tape (1984) I'm lucky enough to think that all these devices with "only" 8 gig of storage are utterly amazing, and they have sound and a colour screen as well! How spoiled some of you youngsters have become.
John, Birmingham, UK
You know what this means, right? PDFS on your ipod. Which is HUGE, and has been very tricky and only available with clumsy workarounds on previous ipods through notes.
David, Tallahassee, FL
The only incredible thing is that fans have any money left over after the 650 dollar iphone. Why would you need a ipod when you have a iphone. Now we will see if the Apple fans are able to double their financial burden to support both the pod and the phone. While I do respect their zeal I am glad that Im not one of them..to many bills to pay.
jay, Toronto, Canada
In Theory the Ipod touch is a great idea. I have the ability to access the web, listen to music, watch videos, view photos, etc. The funny thing is that this really is an iPhone without a few things. Now I don't know about every other consumer out there but my 2cents is that I would rather see an iPhone that can work on more than just the AT&T wireless network than the same old recycled product minus a couple of features for a hundred bucks less. The main problem with even the iPhone is the basic features missing from it. There is no voice dialing which is useful with a bluetooth headset when driving. Until now, there was no way to customize ring tones. The software is locked to not allow any extra software to be installed (That is of course unless a tech head cracks it for you). And overall the AT&T network is simply too slow to support the device fully. I am not knocking Apple for taking the next step but more to stop taking baby steps and leap already.
Anthony Calardo, Chicago, IL
I bet its got the same components and circuit board as the Iphone without the phone chip. I bet they will release versions with larger flash memory sizes from Samsung as it become available, then drop the old ipod video from the lineup. I see Apple as moving away from hard drive memory.
The modders and hackers have got a new toy to play with!!
Andrew, gold coast,
I think that the new ipod is a great thing i think that the internet makes up for the fack that it has no games and i also think that the new itunes on demand is great who wants to go to your pc to get new music so congrats to apple and thair new creation
Dilon, Houston, United States / Texas
The Touch does not switch straight to Cover Flow. It's only when you flip it sideways. becuase the Acceleramator.
Alen, Beverly Hills, California
are people oerlooking the ipod classic they have really improved battery life and the 80gig version is only 169gbp
Matt Creese, Staffordshire,
I believe that most of the iPod touch's features are not for music, more for portability and the ability to web browse or buy itunes music on the go. I am pretty sure that being that they have included youtube they will also include Mail.
Paul Malenke, Champlin, MN
Apple does business like this all the time. The last time, from memory, was with the Shuffle. Closely followed by the Nano. Why on earth would you buy a DAP with no screen, if you knew there was one coming with similar-ish pricing and a screen? Easy answer: because Apple didn't tell anyone.
Jason, Sydney, Australia
look guys, how much space does one person need for music-8GB is enough for 2000 songs! I bet most of you fill up your i-pods with songs you never listen to-just like people have lots of numbers in their phone book they never use!
I for one think this new i-pod will sell like hot cakes! Can't wait!
Go Apple!
paul, norwich,
if only a bigger drive... they will let out a biger 1 soonso i will w8 4 a30gb 1
matt gleave, tring, herts
I like the iPod Touch, but I am also a bit disappointed that there is no mail! The thing that surprised me the most though was the fact that they didn't introduce more features for the wi-fi! There are so many possibilities with it, ie. Who has the easiest music sharing functionality? Apple with iTunes! Why not allow people to view other each others iTunes libraries over wi-fi? Now that would be a neat feature. You don't have to sync everything, only the stuff you want to bring with you. When you are at home then you have access to ALL your music on your iPod. That would be nice!
Andreas, London, England
Gotta agree with the poster quoted above. I have a large music collection, so without a decent sized storage solution to match, the device doesn't appeal to me. Sixteen gig doesn't come close to enough, especially when you add a full-length movie or two. Flash memory is prohibitively expensive and I have to wonder about Apple's decision to move away from the hard drive.
Ivan Stang, Denver, CO
re: MATT.... The nature of technology is that it moves onwards and upwards.. at the moment all that can be expected of such an innovative device is 16GB that is because it uses flash memory, and flash technology is still way behind hard drives for the amount of storage capacity that can be expected. *but* is alot smaller.. as for you just having bought an ipod Nano.. Boohoo.. it happens get over it, or should technology just stop to make you happy with your recent purchase?
ben, dorset,
The real wave of the future is "managing data." This means creating smart playlists, deleting movies off a device once you've watched it, anticipating what you will be watching and/or listening to in the next 24-48 hours, and knowing how to program your iTunes playlists for more detailed groups of songs.
I don't need 80 gigs in my pocket, but the podcasts, television episodes, songs, and pictures that I plan to "consume" between now and the next charge. My 8 gig iPhone has never been much more than half full and I don't expect that I'll need all the space, even though I use all the features, enjoy all kinds of digital entertainment, and have gazillions of songs, television episodes, and movies on my home hard disc.
I don't need the new iPod Touch because my iPhone rocks (and I'll take the $100 store credit). However, I will happily give the iPod to relatives this holiday season!
Jeffrey, San Francisco, CA
If there is ever a need for historian to prove that this is the century of whiners its this comment post. People act as if they have a right to the best electronic product they can possibly conceive of. Perhaps we really have absorbed the 'a product can change your life' myth and are dissapointed when we realise its not going to.
Tim, Hong Kong,
Apple needs to make an ipod with decent battery life. I have a 30 Gb and it lasts like 3 hours then i have to charge it agian..not good
Ben, Toronto, Canada
What's the point of a video player without masses of storage space? Okay, the flash memory enables a nice, thin design but would it have been so hard to create a hard drive version too?
Finally price. The 8GB model is $299 in the US (£150) yet it's a third more expensive in the UK at £199. The same with the 16GB model, $399 in the US (£200) yet it's £269 in the UK. Ripped off yet again.
Luckily I'm taking a trip to the US next month, I already have several orders from friends...
Clive, Bristol, England
They'll sell millions. They'd sell many millions more if it would talk to airtunes over wi-fi. Imagine sitting in your easy chair with 1000's songs in your lap playing over your home stereo. I'd buy it instantly.
Mac, toronto,
whoopi, another crappy apple product. I will never buy one again!!
Steve, Robina, Australia
Honestly, I thought it would have real capacity. 80gig or more. Who in their right mind would buy a 16g player? My kid? Pathetic. . I'm beyond dissappointed. .
Peter, Cape Town, WP RSA
Since the new iPod has WiFi, a microphone capability and the possibility of Voice over IP, will it threaten or compliment the iPhone, still without a European distribution deal? Read more at:

I heard on the radio on the way to school that they have just come out with an Ipod Touch. My first thought was how so totally amazing. Then I get angry cuz I just bought a nano. Then I dought that the thing will even work for more than 3 months. One of the bad things is that there is ardly any memory for anything. Because once you get all the songs and movies and internet files and other stuff you will have no space left. For example, on my nano (8 GB) I have 87 songs and i have already used 1/4 of the memory. Shocking isn't it.
And who says that the warranty won't cost twice as mouch as the I-thingy itself. Oh yeah INTERNET BILLS. You could get a computer for that kind of money and still have a gazillion more features than the IPhone. And why did the sales price on IPhone go down? Well duh, because the word got out that they weren't as cracked up as they were supposed to be.
So in conclusion I would say not to buy the Ipod Touch, cuz they will have a better one soon.
Matt, Charlotte, NC, US
I love the iPod.
I've had two die on me within a week of their 12 month warranty ending, yet I still keep buying them. I could go ahead and get a different mp3 player, but I wouldn't have the same connection with it as I do with my iPod. Its click wheel is paramount; no other player can boast such elegant and easy-to-use controls. I can't see myself buying any other type of mp3 player in the near future. I've grown to love the iPod.
However, the iPod Touch brings about an aire of uncertainty. The click wheel will be gone, and regardless of its superior specification, its low storage capacity will cause it to be its own worst enemy. Who would want such a high-spec device that holds such a small amount of files?
I'm going to pray hard that my 30Gb iPod lives past its warranty!
Simon, Birmingham, UK
No Mail?? It has safari. Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Hot Mail, intranet web based email portals. Sorry had to pull that nail out. The Ipod touch, and IPhone need Real VNC, or other remote terminal clients.
Daniel Howes, Portland, Maine
