Village arms lollipop ladies in the battle against speeders

LOLLIPOP men and ladies in a Scottish village have been recruited by the police to help catch speeding drivers.

In the first pilot project of its kind in Scotland, members of the public in Milton of Campsie, near Glasgow, have been armed with laser speed guns. Working in pairs at speeding blackspots, the volunteers will zap offenders and pass on the registration numbers to police who will send a warning letter to the motorist. Persistent offenders will be monitored by police with a view to prosecution.

The project is a partnership initiative involving the council, East Dunbartonshire Community Safety Partnership and Strathclyde Police, who will train volunteers in how to spot speeders.

So far the community team in Milton of Campsie includes a lollipop lady, a lollipop man, a barman, a married couple and a pensioner.

Superintendent Austin Dorrian said: “We know that speed, and the perception of speed, causes serious community concern. The purpose of this programme is to address this, involve the community and make speeding as socially unacceptable as drink-driving.”
