Mandatory ID cards backed by police chief

Sir John Stevens said that Britain was at its highest-ever level of terrorist alert, with police and security services working on the assumption that an attack was “inevitable”.

Britain’s most senior policeman told Breakfast With Frost on BBC One that identity cards with biometric features should be introduced as soon as possible.

The Home Secretary’s plans for ID cards have met with opposition in the Cabinet, with Gordon Brown, the Chancellor, said to be leading a group of ministers voicing concern over costs and civil liberties.

The Queen’s Speech later this month is expected to include a Bill to introduce a voluntary ID card scheme. Sir John said: “What we would like to see is it being brought in quite quickly. The sooner it is brought in for us, being somewhat selfish in terms of public safety, the better.“
