Chief Inspector Leroy Logan underwent a five-month inquiry after accusations that he tried to claim an £80 hotel bill to which he was not entitled. However, his supporters say that the chief inspector was picked on for supporting another officer, Superintendent Ali Dizaei. Mr Dizaei was cleared twice at the Old Bailey of corruption after a four-year inquiry costing millions of pounds.
Supporters of Mr Dizaei, who has returned to his job with £80,000 damages, say that he was a victim of a witchhunt after his criticism of racism within the force.
Mr Logan was due to begin a case for racial discrimination and victimisation at an employment tribunal next week. That is now unlikely to go ahead. Instead Mr Logan and Sir John Stevens, the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, are expected to release a statement emphasising Mr Logan’s integrity and good reputation.
He will also receive £100,000 damages. By agreeing damages and a joint statement, senior officers will avoid a potentially embarrassing appearance at the employment tribunal. It also means that the Met does not accept liability for any wrongdoing.
Mr Logan had worked as an adviser to the inquiry into the failed prosecution over the death of Damilola Taylor, the black schoolboy stabbed to death in South London. He contributed to the Macpherson inquiry into the death of the black teenager Stephen Lawrence and was appointed MBE in 2001.
