Ulster warders strike over home security

POLICE were in charge of Northern Ireland’s jails last night after hundreds of prison officers refused to work.

Visits to Maghaberry Prison in Co Antrim, Magilligan Prison in Co Londonderry, and Hydebank Young Offenders centre on the outskirts of Belfast were cancelled immediately. All prisoners were confined to their cells.

The unofficial strike action followed a collapse in talks over the provision of security at warders’ homes. Prison officers have claimed that they have not been provided with adequate security despite threats from republican and loyalist terrorists.

Peter Russell, the director-general of the Prison Service, accused the officers of acting irresponsibly. “Staff were warned this morning of the consequences of leaving their posts. It is a breach of their terms and conditions of service and as such they will not be entitled to pay,” he said.

“This action increases the potential for disruption in the prisons when there is already a volatile atmosphere.”
