EUROSTAR is searching for a new name for its St Pancras terminal because it believes the name is too obscure for the millions of Europeans who will arrive there from 2007.

The company has drawn up a list of possible titles which includes London Central, London Fasttrack and London International, but says it is open to suggestions. A spokesman said: “We are considering whether we should alter the name or add to it so that people will know they are arriving in the centre of London. We may end up

with something safe and functional but it would be a good opportunity to add some dynamism to the name.” He admitted that the King’s Cross area was probably best known as one of London’s red-light districts.

St Mary Magdelene, the patron saint of reformed prostitutes, might be a more appropriate figure than St Pancras, who was beheaded at the age of 14 during a persecution of Christians in Rome in the fourth century. The station adopted the name when it opened in 1868.
