Dreamland in Margate, Kent, which boasts a Grade II-listed scenic railway built in 1920, has closed indefinitely while its future is decided. Campaigners say that it has been deliberately neglected. They accuse the local council of failing to support their fight to save the attraction.
A “masterplan” for Margate, published recently by Thanet District Council, recommended using the site for leisure, tourism, recreation or housing. Those fighting to preserve the park said that several British and European operators were interested buying it as a going concern.
Nick Laister, of the Save Dreamland Campaign, said: “It is the biggest tourist attraction in this area and still pulled in nearly 250,000 visitors before it was closed last year.
“The consultants think a theme park is not viable. They are suggesting things like a public sector sports centre or a leisure facility, which you can get in any town. Dreamlands is unique.”
Dreamland was bought in 1996 by Jimmy Godden, whom campaigners accused of removing rides and allowing the park to decline. Mr Godden, who “spent many millions” on equipment and tidying the site, said: “People were not coming to Margate. It’s no longer economically viable to continue.”
