A website designer who called for another 9/11 in Europe and the indiscrimate killing of British troops in Iraq was today found guilty of stirring up race hate.
But the jury could not agree on a second charge against Mizanur Rahman, 23, of inciting murder during a protest against the publication of cartoons of the prophet Mohammed.
Rahman, who had denied both charges, was remanded in custody while the prosecution decide on whether there will be a retrial.
David Perry QC, for the prosecution at the Old Bailey, said: "It is likely there will be a retrial."
The jury had spent two days considering the charges, which followed arrests at a march through London to the Danish Embassy in February.
Some 300 people took part in the protest about a cartoon depicting the prophet Mohammed, the holiest figure in Islam, which was published in European newspapers, led by Jyllands-Posten in Denmark.
During the protest, Rahman, of Palmers Green, north London, had called for another 9/11 in Europe.
Mr Perry had told the jury that Rahman’s words at the rally had been clear and unambiguous.
"What he said was this: ’Oh Allah, we want to see another 9/11 in Iraq, another 9/11 in Denmark, another 9/11 in Spain, in France, all over Europe.
"Bomb, bomb France. Bomb, bomb France. Nuke, nuke France. Nuke, nuke France,’" Perry said, adding that the reference to France may have been prompted by a French newspaper reprinting the Danish cartoons.
The prosecution alleged he encouraged indiscriminate killing, calling for troops to be brought back from Iraq in body bags.
Mr Perry told the court Rahman had called for "indiscriminate killing" of British troops in Iraq.
"We want to see them coming home in body bags. We want to see their blood running in the streets of Baghdad and Falluja," Rahman had said, according to Mr Perry.
But Rahman’s counsel, John Burton, told the jury it was not enough to be "offended, shocked and distressed" by what Rahman said.
"It is a matter of whether a serious crime has taken place," he said.
He compared Rahman’s outpourings to those of people standing on boxes at Speaker’s Corner in Hyde Park.
The case was adjourned to Monday for the Crown to consider its position.
The demonstration in London, where some protesters dressed as suicide bombers and others waved placards praising the 2005 London bombings which killed 52 people, attracted widespread condemnation.
Politicians, the media and many prominent Islamic groups such as the mainstream Muslim Council of Britain called for those involved to be prosecuted.
Similar protests took place in towns and cities around the world.
