More than 100 witnesses who were in and around Victoria Park in Hackney, east London, on the morning of February 3 have been invited to take part.
The witnesses will be asked to retrace their steps at about the time of the stabbing in the hope that some will remember vital clues.
The reconstruction will be filmed and a computer graphics program used to track movements and identify the people most likely to have seen the killer.
Muller, a 27-year-old graduate of the Slade School of Fine Art, was stabbed repeatedly while out jogging at about 8.30am. Her body was discovered in a pool of blood by a pensioner who heard her screams. Police believe she may have been the victim of a random attack since she was not sexually assaulted and her phone was not stolen.
Muller’s father Erich and sister Theresia are expected to join more than 200 police officers and support staff at the reconstruction.
Detective Chief Superintendent Jon Shatford, who is co-ordinating the reconstruction, said: “This is the biggest event of its kind in the Met’s history and is designed to fit together all the pieces in the puzzle we have collected so far.” He added that officers had spoken to more than 100 witnesses who were in Victoria Park or nearby when Muller was killed.
“Margaret was a defenceless young woman who had enjoyed living and working in a vibrant part of London. She was murdered in a vicious unprovoked attack simply because she appeared to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and we are determined to track her killer,” said Shatford.
Police are still keen to trace a man seen running through the park at about 8.10am alongside a woman in a green fleece top and black leggings, similar to those worn by Muller. The man is described as white, 6ft tall, aged between 35 and 40, with dark hair and ginger stubble. He wore a luminous orange or yellow running top. Two men of Mediterranean appearance seen running from the park have also failed to come forward.
