Revenge of workers sacked by text message
THE Accident Group, Britain’s biggest personal injury claims company, sacked nearly 2,500 staff yesterday, many of them by text message, some by e-mail. Salaries for the past month were also cancelled.

One text message asked staff to call a number at head office. An answering machine then told the caller that he had been made redundant. A later text message compounded their woes, adding: “Unfortunately salaries not paid — please do not contact office — full details to follow.”

Some workers looted The Accident Group’s premises in Manchester, Birmingham and Liverpool, taking computers and other equipment as “compensation” for lack of pay and redundancy money.

The company, which was set up ten years ago and used the slogan “Where there’s blame there’s a claim”, helped clients to seek compensation for injuries suffered in accidents. The job losses were announced after its parent company was put into administration.
