General ‘perplexed’ by failure to find WMD

INTELLIGENCE on Iraq’s weapons programmes was perplexingly incomplete, a senior US officer said yesterday.

General John Abizaid, who is due to succeed General Tommy Franks as head of US Central Command, said that the failure to find any weapons of mass destruction was also perplexing.

Appearing at his confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee, General Abizaid said he was convinced that there had been no effort to distort intelligence. He was also confident that coalition forces would uncover evidence of Saddam Hussein’s weapons programmes.

The comments by General Abizaid, an Arabic-speaking Harvard scholar and expert in the Middle East, provided a rare insight into the frustration being felt in the Pentagon at the failure so far to uncover any evidence of weapons of mass destruction.

In his new job he will have responsibility for Iraq and Afghanistan.
