Pilot studies to tackle rising risk of flooding

TEWKESBURY As the River Avon overflowed in Gloucestershire during another weekend of stormy weather, the Government announced plans to reduce the number of homes and businesses affected by floods each year.

Climate change models forecast that there will be up to 20 per cent more winter rainfall in Britain in the next century. Flooding already costs the economy £270 million a year and, unless drainage management improves, the bill is set to reach £15 billion by 2080. Ian Pearson, the Climate Change and Environment Minister, will introduce the initiative today in Great Yarmouth, where more than 90 properties were damaged in flash flooding in September. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs is investing £1.7 million in 15 pilot schemes aimed at minimising urban flooding.
