The alleged movements of the men accused of trying to bomb London's transport system on July 21 last year were laid out in court today by Nigel Sweeney, QC, prosecuting. Four men detonated bombs, which failed to properly explode, between 12:30 pm and just after 1pm:
Ramzi Mohammed
Mr Mohammed, Mr Omar and Mr Ibrahim drove in Mr Mohammed's Fiat Punto car from Kensington to Stockwell in the late morning of July 21. They parked close to Stockwell Tube station and called Mr Osman, who was still in Kensington, "no doubt to synchronise the times of those north and south of the river", the court heard. Mr Mohammed, 25, was filmed entering the station wearing a sweatshirt with "New York" written across it. He took a Northern Line train to Oval and attempted to blow himself up between the stations. "In the tunnel, Mohammed turned so that his rucksack was facing a mother with a pushchair and then detonated, causing panic, fear and confusion, even though the main charge had failed to go off," the court heard. He escaped by foot to Brixton.
Yassin Omar
Mr Omar, 26, was identified by witnesses, DNA traces and CCTV footage as the man who tried to bomb a train at Warren Street, the court was told. He too entered the Underground system at Stockwell, taking a Victoria Line train northbound. His bag exploded "with the same effect" as Mr Mohammed's, only causing panic on the train. CCTV footage showed him running through Warren Street station. In the street outside he asked for help from passers-by to escape, "none of whom knew about the bomb", the court heard. Omar left London dressed as a Muslim woman in a burka, the court heard, making his way to Birmingham, where he was arrested in a house, wearing a rucksack and standing in a bath.
Hussain Osman
Mr Osman, 28, walked from Mr Mohammed's flat in Delgarno Gardens, Kensington, to Westbourne Park where he caught a Hammersmith and City line train heading south towards Hammersmith, the court heard. Between Latimer Road and Shepherd's Bush he detonated his bomb and abandoned a rucksack, in which his gym membership card was later found. Footage showed him fleeing the station and catching a bus to Wandsworth. He then escaped to Paris and Rome, the court was told. A pair of boots with his DNA on them were found in a wood near Brighton, and subsequently matched traces left at the bomb scene.
Muktar Said Ibrahim
Mr Ibrahim, 28, entered Stockwell Station and took a Northern Line train towards the City shortly before Mr Mohammed, the court heard. He got off at Bank and boarded a number 26 bus, heading east, and sat on the top deck. "As the bus reached the junction of Shoreditch High Street and Hackney Road, at shortly after 1pm, he detonated his bomb... Again, only the detonator fired." Mr Ibrahim fled but his DNA was later found on the bomb’s battery and on a shirt near the bomb on the bus, the court was told.
Manfo Asiedu
Mr Asiedu waited with Mr Osman in the flat at Delgarno Gardens while those heading for Stockwell got into position, the court heard. But on the way to his target Mr Asiedu "lost his nerve at the last moment" and dumped his bomb in a wooded area in Little Wormwood Scrubs where it was found two days later. A replica of his bomb was shown to the court, including screws, tacks, washers and nuts stuck to the side as shrapnel, intended to "maximise the possibility of injury, fatal or otherwise", the court heard. Mr Asiedu presented himself to police, lying "on an epic scale", in a series of interviews, prosecutors said.
