Student killed in Uganda crash

KAMPALA

A British medical student was killed when a bus collided with a goods truck on a highway in Uganda.

Laura Alexandra Case, 24, believed to be from London, was travelling on the bus from the town of Kabale, where she was training in a hospital, to Kampala, the capital, when the crash happened on Sunday.

Six other people — four on the bus and two in the lorry — died in the accident, which also left 20 people injured.

Ugandan police said it appeared that both vehicles were trying to avoid pot holes when they smashed into each other head on. A spokesman that Ms Case died at the scene, about 25 miles from Kampala. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office confirmed that a British woman had died.

About 2,000 people die in road accidents each year in Uganda, 70 per cent of them due to reckless driving and speeding, police say. (PA)
