Tearful fiancée pays tribute to ‘amazing’ soldier killed in Iraq

The fiancée of the 100th serviceman to die in action in Iraq paid a tearful tribute at his funeral to his courage and kindness. About 500 people attended the service for Second Lieutenant Jonathan Carlos Bracho-Cooke, of Hove, 24, who was killed when a patrol that he was commanding was hit by a roadside bomb in Basra, on February 5.

Laura Bottomley, 24, told mourners at St George’s Roman Catholic Church, in Hove, who included members of his family and servicemen from his regiment, the 2nd Battalion The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment, that Lieutenant Bracho-Cooke was worried “by what was going on around him” in Iraq. She said that he was an “amazing man with a big heart” and added: “I’m not sure he realised how much he touched other people’s lives.” They were due to marry in August. The father of Lieutenant Bracho-Cooke, also called Jonathan, said that his son had a natural instinct to protect the vulnerable.

The body was laid to rest with military honours.
