Heather Mills McCartney, the estranged wife of Sir Paul McCartney, has been criticised by police for dialling 999 too many times.
A senior police officer said that the 39-year-old, who is in the middle of a bitter divorce battle, made a "disproportionate" number of emergency calls.
She is said to have dialled 999 four times within a 24-hour period complaining of being harassed by photographers outside her home in Hove, Brighton.
Chief Superintendent Kevin Moore, of Brighton and Hove Police, said there was a danger that any further complaints would not be taken seriously.
“We are having to spend a disproportionate amount of time on one particular person," he said. "We are duty-bound to respond, but clearly people who make lots of calls to the police run the risk of being treated as the little boy who cried wolf.
“Officers who have attended previously to find there have been no grounds might not take any claims seriously, and that’s the danger we face.”
Last month it emerged that Ms Mills was in fear of her own safety and that of her daughter Beatrice after she received death threats.
In January, her sister Fiona Mills made an internet appeal for the end to media "harassment" of her family, saying she was "deeply concerned" for their safety.
Phil Hall, Ms Mills's spokesman said: “She is a single mum who has been very nervous about all the things that have happened. She has been followed late at night by people she does not know.
“The danger is that she will not call police in future and something serious will happen. What is she supposed to do?”
Today, Ms Mills said that her divorce was like "getting blood out of a stone" as she unveiled her latest animal-rights campaign.
Asked by Sky News how long the divorce could take, she replied: “I’ve got no idea. It’s like getting blood from a stone. It could take a year, I’ve got no idea.
She added: “It’s not down to me, it’s all down to me hubby."
Ms Mills and the former Beatle announced the end of their four-year marriage last May. They appeared in court in London on March 1 for a preliminary hearing in their divorce.

I understand that there will be enormous media interest in the breakdown of the Mills/McCartney marriage! However I do feel that we dont know either of these 2 people and that they should be allowed a certain amount of privacy. Do not forget that there is a small child caught up in this and it seems unfair that her mother is being harrassed whilst in the company of her daughter. As a mother myself I would find this particularly alarming and distressing. I understand that Ms Mills is not well liked and sometimes does herself no favours but she is hardly public enemy no1.
Dawn C, Llandudno, North Wales
She did marry an American Idol, had a child, and is now in the throws of a divorce - all in just 4 short years. I think Paul has no problem supporting his child; but why should he have to pay her monthly. She is a model, and has a gig on the dance show, so she is capable of earning a living, and SEEKING PUBLICITY all on her own. Their daughter should have a body guard when going places publicly that both parents should pay for. She is not applying for secretarial positions or marketing jobs - everything she has put her career around is PUBLIC. What does she expext when there are commercials saying she is really worried about her leg flying off in the dance competition??? This is the first time I have ever heard someone make such a comment of their own limitation and it is quite appauling!!
If you do not want publicity, my suggestion is to look into jobs that are less PUBLIC
Stacy P., Dover, DE
Charge the lady for each call and sue her at the same time for waisting valuable police time! She may hence hire private protection which she can more than just afford.
Fred L., Chicago , IL
Hmmm. Maybe her 'high profile' animal rights campaigns are for Paul's benefit. Is she competing with his deceased ex-wife there, who was a high-profile vegetarian? Remember that when someone dies they can do no wrong.
Maybe Heather found that she could never take the place of Linda in Paul's affections and this has driven her to the edge...I can't help thinking of Diana with regard to Charlie's love for Camila being centre-stage all their married lives...
Ajna, Glasgow, Scotland
If she's camera shy why become a model? why marry an ex Beatle. Why lie by saying you were a newspaper reporter I shant go on.
John, Essex, UK
Spending so much money on shoppping, travelling, hotels and so on, Why does not she contract one or two or more security guards 24/24 hours per day ? Why should the Police to be bothered with this hysterical behaviour of a spoiled , rich, good for nothing except an expert on sexual education and playing at humanitary and animal causes which I am suspicious only to bring herself to public notice and to be in the limelight by the media. I am sorry to say but that woman is a great " BLUFF ".
aurora tapdinhas, Lisbon, portugal, Portugal
It must be really tough being a celebrity. Of course it is even more difficult when you have to keeping "denying" that you are not a publicity seeker. Heightened sense of self-value based on inflated presumptions and equal lack of real intelligence can easily drive one into being a hypochondriac.
Prabhat, UK,
I think the papparazzi should leave her alone. She does a lot of good for very good causes and she has been completely torn apart by some of the lesser respected varieties of the press. As for criticizing the British police force, I should think that you should concentrate on your own, since they handle their own people so roughly.
J, germany,
Whether you like or dislike her is not the issue. Any person who feels threatened is quite right to phone the police; ringing 4 times in 24hrs does not appear excessive. It they handled the situation correctly on the initial occasion perhaps there would not be reason to call them another 3 times.
I am surprised the police have leaked this information. Normally they do not comment on celebrities, or are they Beetles fans?
Rob, Birmingham, UK
Good luck getting any answer from any police station world-wide.
As a seasoned cosmopolitan the modern policeman has become more of
a doughnut cum coffee phenomenon and is best portrayed by the Simpson's
Chief Wiggum. BTW, I just googled him to check on spelling, and lo
and behold, a pic of him posing with his doughnut and coffee. If you get in
trouble, call a hippie.
Eugene, Heidelberg, germany
Per Deos immortales! How could I have missed this excellent, truly
excellent piece of Brit humour? No coincidence that the picture
you included in the article is of our girl posing with the Chief of
Police himself. Bravo, well done.
Eugene, Heidelberg, germany
What it is with hated Brits having such success in America? Mr Burrell is now a reality TV star over there, coaching ordinary American girls to become "Princesses", and has appeared in various talk shows.
Hated Heather Mills is now on American Strictly Come Dancing? How is that *not* publicity seeking?
What a *expletive*.
Pete, Cov,
She says her divorce is like "...getting blood out of stone". Isn't that what Bianca Jagger said - I fank you.
Mark Szawlowski, Istanbul,
I wonder if she wasn't married to Paul McCartney (obviously *beyond* reproach...) would people be so quick to judge her harshly? I think this is a case of sour grapes for some.
Jen, USA,
If she would pay me 750 a week american dollars and pay for my hand gun license in her country, and possibly room and board. I would be her personal body guard 24 hrs a day 7 days a week. It isnt that difficult.
Jim, Indianapolis, Indiana
The reason he didn't have a pre-nup is that they are not valid in UK Law
Dazzler, London, UK
Amazing to me is the amount of vitriol spewed at "famous people"!
I am a commoner, was shortly married into a "famous musical family", and believe me,death threats take their toll on a body's nerves! While outside 7th avenue in Minneapolis, said relative got so damned frightened of rabid fans, she took a runner, damn near broke her ankle, and shook for an hour in fear. Trust this,"it ain't all it's cracked up to be.How would the average person handle strangers taking liberties with even their most private moments? Constantly looking over your shoulder can ruin nerves, sleep, relationships,ad nauseum! Creator, grant that I not judge another 'til I have walked a mile in her Moccasins(shoes for those too busy judging to have a heart!
Ownley Hyooman, USA,
I would think Sir Paul probably considers the 50 million dollars/pounds/Euros or so to be the best money he ever spent - in my view worth every penny. Best of luck to him.
Jeff Champlin, Houston, USA / TX
Yes, having photographers stalking you outside your home is worth calling the cops for. To say otherwise is stupid. Wouldn't you call the cops if someone was lurking outside in your bushes, peering into your windows? Get real, people.
Joe, Columbus, OH
I think Sir Paul is now rip for getting away from writing all those beautiful love songs and going to a few good ole Country and Western tunes. Here he can pour out his soul on how he lost his house, lost his pet, lost his truck etc etc etc
lordhoho, ontario, canada
Every time police have to respond to one of her frivolous calls, they risk neglecting a serious, life-threatening situation elsewhere. If she cares so much about animals, she might give some consideration to other human beings.
georgep, Geneva,
I work at a 911 emergency call center out of the 250 calls. I get a day. I receive more the 80 from routine callers after the 5 response the callers are fined and in some cases arrested. Because she is a Celebrity nothing will happen but if something did happen I hope that the Brighton Police Department responds with tthe same urgency with every call. but if nothing happens (again) she should be heavily fined for the officers time and effort.
Mckenna, newport beach, usa
not being without a bob or two, I suggest she invests a little of her fortune to be in some personal security and leave the Police to concentrate on 'crime' a little less trivial?
Mark, Warsaw, Poland
I can't understand why people always vilify Ms Mills and lionise Paul McCartney? I don't particularly like either one or how they are written about in the press. However the whole situation strikes me as completely unfair. I think there is a tendency to treat McCartney as a national treasure who can't do anything wrong, when there are many accounts about how difficult he is to deal with and how obsessed he is with his own position! I think they both made mistakes in marrying the other and I think people should be less one-sided.
Alex Boakes, London,
Heather MIlls is divorcing a man who is considered a saint. He has bucket loads of money more than she does and is being stingy. He should be concerned for his daughter and the women he loved and take care of business. The lesson here: Rich guys needs prenups!
Kazzrie Neval, Oklahoma City, OK, USA
leave the girl alone
m, m, m
No sympathy for Heather from me either. That manipulative women was truly after Paul's money. Why Paul didn't have a pre-nup, is beyond me. He definitely must know now that he should have listened to his daughters and friends. What a hard way to learn a lesson. This women was not his lovely Linda - he still misses Linda so much (so obvious in his latest beautiful and moving classical album).
B. Dunigan, Rotterdam Jct, NY USA
People who criticize this woman in the sort of terms found in this comments board are bordering on sick. You don't know this woman, you don't know Paul McCartney (you just think you do, because you've heard his music--yes, it IS great music, but lots of talent doesn't necessarily go with great character, nor does it always make one a good husband). Much less do you know what happens between spouses; only they know that. SO STOP TAKING SWIPES AT HER. YOU DON'T HAVE THE MORAL HIGH GROUND.
While we're at it, some pointed out that she shouldn't mind the paparazzi. Who told YOU it's only the snappers?! The lawyer said "People she doesn't know". Do you wanna be coming home with a potential knofe wielder skulking behind you.? I didn't think so. So lay off Heather Mills and go get a life.
Kudos to Don Perkins, Clinton Township, USA/Michigan for keeping a lovely, human take on things around all this bloodthirsty nonsense
Milly, manchester,
It's called self centered behavior. Throw in being a bit of a sociopath and there's one fine witches' brew. This is about a very unstable person. She will have a hand in raising a little girl with an equally unstable aunt half the time at this so called mums' side. Just because you can give birth doesn't make you a mother. A mother ALWAYS puts her childs' needs ahead of her own. If she truly cared for Beatrice, she would have settled this back in May and maintained a silence of dignity the way Sir Paul has. Then maybe she'd still have just a pinch of credibility. But she's in it for the money. Always has been. It's never going to be enough. Enough attention from the police, enough money,
attention from the media. Obeying and breaking laws at her whim. She needs help.
soloula, USA,
I'm not particularly judgemental - I hope, but "As you sow so shall you reap" comes to mind.
tj, Malvern, UK
I feel sorry for Heather. She has become a much hated figure and what exactly has she done wrong? Can nobody believe the Holy Sir Paul could actually do any wrong? She is obviously scared for herself and her daughter, and I can't blame her. I wish the press and the public would leave her alone.
Elaine, York, Yorkshire
please, she used the media last year to protest the seal hunt in canadian waters, speaking half-truths,and lying about the real issues behind the hunt, then, after she splits
with Sir Paul, she has the nerve to complain about the same media...please,she needs to grow up mentally, take some responsiblity over her life and leave the rest of us alone....
Barry Heath, Halifax, Canada
well, well,well....shame on you all. how pathetic it is to comment on people you don t know.....your horible comments about that poor woman you ve never even met but made your opinion from tabloid stories...does it make you feel close to the celebrities? stop reading this stories and start doig something important....make a difference in the world, just like she did by helping thousands of amputees around the world and figthing for animal rights.
nika , frankfurt, germany
Ms. Mills, will you martry me? No pre-nup of course.
Debbie, Brighton, USA
Paul is still married to Heather, As much as he might regret his original decision, he has a daughter through the marriage and it was surely he that asked Heather to marry him. The decision has not worked out. OK. As I see it, regardless of the underlying reasons for the breakup of the marriage, Paul has responsibilities; particularly towards his daughter and his moral responsibility to end his marriage quickly and cleanly and in such a way that does not in any way whatever, do any harm to the relationship between his daughter and her mother, Healther Mills. The better he achieves that, the better life his daughter will have in the future. Paul will have to remain a friend of Heather for his daughters sake. That is his moral responsibility, he should think about that.
For those of you standing on the fringe, please, for just one moment in time, give a thought for Paul's daughter and the effect your cat calls have on her life for the future, for she alone is blameless in all this.
Chris Coles, Medstead, Alton, UK
No symphathy for the woman here. My friends & I here in the US can't figure out why Paul married her either. So obvious she is after the money. Nothing but trouble from the start. Poor Paul. He should have listened to family and friends warnings.
J., Eugene, OR, USA
Paul obviously made an ill-advised trip down the alter. It was a brief marriage and heather wants millions or is that a billion. Sounds like a gold digger to me.
david ouellet, woodbridge, on, Canada
Basically, I believe that any person who is kind to animals is fundamentally a decent person, with a good heart. I think both Paul McCartney and Heather Mills fall into this category, and I am sorry to see either one of them having to go through the turmoil of a divorce.
Don Perkins, Clinton Township, USA/Michigan
Poor Paul. He loses his true love and tries to
find someone to replace her and he gets this.
Its such a combination of sad and disgusting.
Derek, Kearny, USA
Doesn't she have the option of taking her leg off to use as a weapon?
E, Dallas, USA
Why doesn't someone just tell these people to leave her alone. No matter how small the crime is, it is the polices job to attend to so why don't they just warn the press to leave her alone. She'll stop calling problem solved!
J, Leicester, UK
It's ridiculous... she's going to be on "Dancing With The Stars" in the U.S. so clearly she enjoys the limelight well enough to keep the nonsense going. I'm quite sure she can afford security to keep things in line and leave the police out to official business.
Wren, Midland, MI, USA
If she truly is afraid for her safety every other hour I am quite sure she can afford to pay at least one security officer to stand duty. Ahh, but then she would not be in the news.
Dave, Washington, DC, U.S.
She says she is not a publicity seeker, but she has a publicist !?!
Paul, Amsterdam,
Despite all the many valid coments above, is being followed by photographers, however irritating that may be, really worthy of a 999 emergency call?
Jamie, London,
Having the great fortune to have a press photographer outside Sir Paul McCartneys house, when she couldn't get in, together with a fax having been leaked to the press about the divorce, alleging assault by the same person, has not been the PR success that Ms Mills would have hoped. Now that avenue has failed she doesn't want the press around. Oh dear, what a shame.
David Leslie, Perth, Scotland
She can't have it all her own way, media when it suits her and not expecting any interest on her regarding the split up.
I wonder if Ms Mills realised that her video for animal rights campaign would end up around the net? I beleive so.
The police are hard pressed enough without the likes of Ms Mills wasting time and putting serious callers at risk of not being able to get a quick enough response.
Frank, Morecambe, Lancashire
She is not a 'single mum' Bea has a father and would
be much better off living with him. It seems Ms. Mills doesn't pay much attention to the needs of her child.
Liz, USA,
If she is that frightened let her use some of her advance payment hiring a security officer.
There are some reputable firms run by ex-service personel.
Cam, Essex,
She has been followed late at night by people she does not know? Perhaps Ms Mills should stop performing such high-profile stunts and some of these "people she does not know" (aka Paparazzi), might leave her along. Any way joining us normal people will not guarantee her not being harassed - something in normal people have to put up with in today's society without the pandering of our Police. Poor spoilt Ms Mills!
David, Ashford, Kent
For a million I'd marry Sir Paul, heck I marry him for nothing! What an interesting four years that'd be for me - even though I am a bloke. I can't understand why someone needs more than a lottery win in compensation for those four years. Amazing!
Simon Tilley, London, UK
How unpleasant and personal the earlier views are. I look forward to hearing how supportive the police are to their calls. That is the issue.
robert, brighton,
Why in heavens name did Paul Mcartney ever marry this person.
Martin, Chesham,
Heather Mills has courted publicity as much as all the other so called 'celebs' and that is part of their career plan which with all due respect, the public should not have to either pay for or be inconvenieced by as the police may have more important things to do.
DMM, Sussex, UK
No matter how much I try I can't muster any sympathy for her. I agree with the causes she champions, but every time I see her I want to club a seal.
Hector Stable, London, UK
The boy who cried wolf - could this be any more appropriate? She clearly does things for public sympathy, and having to ruin your reputation with the press is one thing, but to have your local police say "You are abusing the system" must be embarrassing. Clearly Heather thinks she is owed quite a bit, despite the fact that she's not. She isn't special, she isn't the pretty, pretty princess and I'm sick of her - and now so are the police. Let her cry wolf, maybe they'll just stop responding to her when she is in a real time of need - how will she handle things then? Just as poorly as she always does, I am sure.
Dennis Martin, Oakland, CA, USA
Mmmm, could somebody please find me a stone (or should that be a beatle?) that i could marry for a couple of years and then extract tens of million pounds from after accusing it of being cold and heartless. Its a hard life and we all feel very deeply for Ms Mills predicament.
Monay Grabba, London,
If she is worried about being followed. Shouldn't someone shout "Behind You"
glyn rees, kidlington, england
Oh, I feel so bad for Miss Mills. I thought she is getting £10k a day for security?
Miss M, UK,
