A CLOSE friend of Diana, Princess of Wales, has condemned as “bizarre and inappropriate” the choice of Richard Chartres, Bishop of London, to give the address at her memorial service this summer.
Rosa Monckton said Chartres had had “no relationship whatever” with the princess. Other friends claimed that, in his role as Dean of the Chapel Royal, the bishop and his staff failed to support her at the time of her divorce in 1996.
The service is being held on August 31, the 10th anniversary of Diana’s death. It is likely to be a ceremony for family and friends rather than a public event, although there are plans to televise it.
The choice of Chartres, 59, to give the address is understood to have been made by princes William and Harry.
But Monckton, whose daughter Domenica is a goddaughter of the princess, said: “This invitation is bizarre and inappropriate. As far as I am aware he had no relationship with Diana whatsoever.”
Patrick Jephson, Diana’s former private secretary, expressed similar concerns to those of Monckton, adding: “I wonder why it is not appropriate for the Archbishop of Canterbury to perform this task.”
He said clergy in the royal household “in shouting distance” of the princess had failed to come to her aid.
Chartres became Dean of the Chapel Royal in 1996, the year after he became Bishop of London.
Chartres, a contemporary of the Prince of Wales at Cam-bridge University, kept a vigil beside Diana’s coffin in Kensing-ton Palace on the eve of her funeral. However, he was given no formal role in the funeral at Westminster Abbey and was not invited to attend her burial at Althorp, the estate of the Spencer family in Northamptonshire.
Chartres was later appointed an executor of Diana’s will, but friends of the princess have criticised him for the way he carried out this role.
The memorial service will be conducted by Padre Patrick Irwin, chaplain to the Household Division, who has responsibility for the Guards Chapel in Wellington Barracks, London, where the service is expected to be held.
William and Harry chose the venue because, as officers in the Household Division, it is their regimental chapel. Those expected to attend include the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, as well as Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall.
Several members of Diana’s family, including Earl Spencer, her brother, will also be there. There will also be numerous representatives of charities supported by the princess.
Chartres was unavailable for comment but a bishop in close contact with him said: “It’s not an unreasonable request. Richard’s connections were with the whole family, including Diana.”
A Clarence House spokes-woman said: “The Bishop of London was personally chosen and invited by Princes William and Harry because they very much want him to be there.”

HRH Princess Diana's untimely tragic death and the Queen's horrid and lacking response to her People has left me cold and ambivalent to the British Royal Family. This so called "family memorial service" is not about the life of Diana...it remains about her ex-husband and his efforts to promote himself and his mistress. Her two sons are adults and are fully responsible for their actions. Shame on them for their allowing such abuse of this memorial service to be done in their name. I've now lost my respect and compassion for these two young men as well. As for Camilla...if she has an ounce of decency left in her body she will find herself conveniently out of the country on official business that day.

Camilla being invited, good! It is up the Their Royal Highnesses Prince's William and Henry who they invite. I have to say the two Princes seem to have come much further in getting on with their lives than the torch carrying villages who still have a thing for the Late Princess of Wales.

Camilla, if you have any consideration, please stay home.

Camilla to be invited, outrageous!!!

Instead of being for Diana, this whole situation has become a venue for Charles and his cronies and a huge Pr coup for the Wales family. If William and Harry dont know who were their mothers friends, her family and those involved in her charities they should ask,or let others who knew to organise it.Instead they are inviting people who never respected her in life or death, and are allowing Ch to use this again for more Camilla promotion.I must say, they are both dissapointing. The Guards Chapel,is a hideous building, and i do wonder why since they wanted to be a family affair, they didnt chose the Spencer Church in Althorp?I hope more friends of the Princess speak out against it,and i even more hope, the Spencers will walk out.Shame to William and Harry, someone who didnt knew her,and was clearly siding with their father in those dificult years, will speak for Diana? They have every freedom to invite anyone they want,if it was about them. But it isnt. They should be ashamed. They arent kids anymore/

I'm very disappointed in this whole service. The venue, the Bishop of London as choice, and Camilla and Charles in attendance. It should have been in a larger venue with people from all walks of life invited. William and Harry seem totally absorbed in their father's world and don't seem to have any concept of their late mother and what she would have wanted. And it is sad that the Spencers were never invited to key events for William and Harry who seem to have forgotten they are also Spencers.
