Judge apologises for 21/7 delay

A judge promised an investigation yesterday into the lengthening delays that have beset the 21/7 bomb plot trial. Mr Justice Fulford, who is presiding over the case at Woolwich Crown Court, apologised to jurors as he was forced to adjourn the case early for the week.

The judge said that the delay was unavoidable because the prosecution required time to consider material from Professor Hans Michels, an explosives expert giving evidence for the defence. But the judge said: “That a case of this kind, a case of any kind, should be delayed for this reason shows up our criminal justice system in a very poor light. I intend to thoroughly investigate what has gone wrong at the end of this trial.” The case began in January and was due to last three months.

Six men deny conspiracy to murder and conspiracy to cause explosions.
