E-mails ‘fabricated by agency’

LONDON

An American banking heir attempted to strengthen his hand in divorce proceedings by passing on fake e-mails to his lawyers, a court was told.

Matthew Mellon, whose wife Tamara founded the Jimmy Choo fashion empire, received e-mails supposedly written by her from Active Investigation Services, a detective agency he hired to spy on her, Southwark Crown Court was told. He admitted to police that he was “on the border of unethicalness”. Miranda Moore, QC, for the prosecution, said that a computer expert gained access to Mrs Mellon’s e-mails but found nothing useful, so manufactured e-mails that made it look as if she was not being frank in financial disclosures. Mr Mellon denies conspiracy to cause unauthorised modification of computer material.

He is one of six defendants, including Jeremy Young, who ran the agency and who has pleaded guilty to all 15 counts on the indictment. The other men deny wrongdoing.

The case continues.
