LONDON
A Mass and rally called for a one-off “earned amnesty” for hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants living in Britain.
The Strangers into Citizens campaign was joined by faith leaders, immigrants from around the world, community activists and church groups at a gathering in Trafalgar Square.
The campaign is calling for a two-year work permit, without access to benefits, for “irregular” migrants – refused asylum-seekers or visa overstayers – who have been in the country for four years or more.
Addressing the rally, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, the leader of Catholics in England and Wales, said immigrants living and working in the country deserved to be treated with “fairness, with justice and with dignity”.
The rally, which came after a Mass at Westminster Cathedral for migrant workers, was supported by Baroness Williams of Crosby and Billy Bragg, the singer and activist.

No to Amnesty. What amnesty are you talking about? This country is already full as it is and doesn't need another 500,000 on it's shoulders.
The infrastructure, the housing, the transport are simply not capable of serving that many people.
No to amnesty.
jamal, Brighton, UK
yes to amnesty. this can help the economy rise up. Be fair their humans too.
Rein, london, UK
why only 4 years and more will grant amnesty? why can't give amnesty to who stay here for only a year or less? lets be fear enough. lets give amnesty to those people whose already here at that year 2007.
nerry, manchester, uk

The problem facing the government is: What should they do with the 500,000 undocumented migrants? The government realises that these people contribute immensely to the British society in various ways and left for them they would grant them amnesty. The problem here is that the government do not want to loose votes in future elections as a result of this. However, the campaign is gathering momentum and it is a matter of time before the government takes action on this. What is my position on this? One-off "earned amnesty" is the practical and most sensible approach to solving this problem.

If you say YES to an amnesty then why not allow all criminals out of prisons (some of them may deserve a second chance)... The legal system must NOT be selective on who it allows to break the law. Kick out ALL Illegal immigrants, Bogus asylum seekers etc etc, but first strip them of ALL assets gained on their stay here and present them with an invoice for any handouts claimed while here. To grant an amnesty to one would trigger a 5 fold number of 'illegals' within a couple of years. In ALL the countries ignorant enough to issue them, amnesties have NEVER achieved their aims, it compounds the problem for the future. It proclaims loud and clear Crime pays in the UK, Come one, Come all. Missed this amnesty 'Never mind another one will be round the corner'

Dear Gordon Brown,
You will be loved, honoured, and respected more, if you declare an amnesty when you take your position as the prime minister of Britain.
You will surely make a whole difference to the country, and will be voted into the next election with so much speed.
Please consider the illegal immigrants and set an example, so that the world
will hold you at high esteem.
They are human beings, and will like to have a stable life. Thank you as you consider this option.
We have got alot to offer to this country.

At least the idea of giving amnesty to illegal immigrant have came back to the highlight. Looks like Govt. using this issue just to cash vote for them self. Last year same issue was rise and then went in-to cold bag. Most of the economist supported the idea, saying It will benefit the Country. Since Govt trying to bring the ID card system, which will not be any good unless those who are here already get some sort of recognition. How much tax, NI contribution govt. will get. Gordon Brown as new PM should make difference and change the country needed most. Its time for Govt to stop acting as they are doing something, Now its time for them to take some good action and give amnesty for peoples and country's good. "Yes to Amnesty"
King, London, London

L, nottingham,
illegal immigrants, failed asylum seekers, over stayers and children born form any of the above are human being same as we the citizens of uk.
therefore, the gov't should give them the right to live, they are chilren of the universe.
We hope that gordon Brown who is now coming to be the new uk PM should think carecully and grant them amnesty as long as they have lived in this country for 4 yrs or more.
Moreover,we suggest that innocient kids or children from any of those mentioned should be granted british citizenship straight away.
All we need to think about in this situation is that, illegal immigrant, failed asylum seekers and over stayers etc are greatly contributing to improving our economy, they'v got lives same as us, and they r subject to human right protection.
PLEASE GRANT THEM AMNESTY THIS FAITHFULL YEAR 2007.
WE WANT THEM TO BECOME PART OF OUR SOCIETY.
Amadu , london, uk
People flee to UK and US for sanctuary. We wanna believe these are havens for people not another form of suffering. Please permit us to work while we work towards rebuilding our natio. What help are you giving us really. We fled our countries as we entrusted you to be pitiful to us. The situation we live here is as bad as what we have left in our war-tone countries, some of which is inflicted by the United States and the UK. How can we trust you in peace making or in helping us bring about democracy in our nations marred with tyranisation? Help us to work and rebuild our nations. You are killing us with benefits because now we cannot utilise the knowledge we have to better our lives. We dont wanna be a burden to your society but we can work and fend for ourselves. We don't wanna make mistakes but we do as we feel like we are pushed in a corner and we can't breath. We plead with you to emphathise with us and give us visas to work.

I have been here for over 10 years. I would say that I know
london in greater detail that my city of origin. In some shape or form I would describe myself as a londoner.
I'm an explorer, I'm not an invader, I have made choices in life, those choices have landed me in here.
You,ve got to be in my shose to feel what it's like.
I leave in fear 24/7 , I have been assaulted and couldn't report it, fear has invaded me for a long time time.
I have lost self respect. life has become a nightmare. Sometimes I wake up in the midle of the night with fear and I ask myself: am i going to see my familly ? if not now when? People around me at work keep moaning about trivial things, I have high expectations from life, money never was one of them. long time before, you could judge great nation by looking at their past, now you do it by living among one of them and have attention to life's detail.
Workplace for asn undocumented person is just a story that starts and ends in sorrow !julia
julia white, liverpool city, uk
If you look the world today, everything is generaed from the past. some strong nations today have became richer because of what they did to the poorer nations in the past the reality is well known ( slavery and neo colonisation) poorest countries don't decide the fate. from this illegal migrants becomes deasese today. who have panished those nations that made slavery to others nations ? that you are getting undocumented people because of what you did to they nations and now you're willing to send them back to reward them, continue monitoring they govment to make them suffer.in reality if you believe that God exist you who knows the truth, you have no place in his kingdom.
illegal workers don't have nothing back from eveything they work for, all the taxes they pay build your societies make your economies strong, good action should be pay by bad action really ? if everybody have the same thought that means none think enough.
emanuel, captown, southafrica
