More than 60,000 music fans and royalists filled Wembley today to pay tribute to Diana, Princess of Wales, queueing patiently to pass stringent security checks after the abortive car bomb attacks on London and Glasgow.
Millions more watched the event on television.
Prince William and Prince Harry marked ten years since their mother’s death with a pop concert on what would have been her 46th birthday.
The Princess’ favourite band Duran Duran was among the first on stage as they played her favourite song “Rio”.
John Taylor, Duran Duran’s bass player, paid tribute to the Princes for their role in organising the gig.
“I thought it was very brave of them to put this show on. It’s courageous to put something like this together in memory of their mother,” he said. “I can only imagine the emotions that there would be putting on this in remembrance. They’re kids that have lost their mother early on. They were very keen that we would keep it upbeat.”
The memorial concert is one of the first shows at the revamped national stadium. Elton John, who sang 'Candle in the Wind' at the Princess’ funeral was on the bill along with Status Quo, Rod Stewart, Tom Jones, Take That and a medley of musicals created by Lord Lloyd Webber.
As well as a selection of the Princess’ favourite artists the princes included some more contemporary acts, including Lily Allen and P Diddy.
William, 25, said the celebration was designed to remember the good things Diana did, and to counter the “rumbling of people bringing up the bad” over the last 10 years.
The Princess died on August 31, 1997, along with her boyfriend Dodi Fayed and their driver when their Mercedes crashed inside the Pont d’Alma tunnel in Paris.
The princes were accompanied at the show by Harry’s girlfriend Chelsy Davy and Kate Middleton, who helped organise the event before she split with William.
