The London and Glasgow bomb plots were carried out with the approval of Osama bin Laden, the al-Qaeda leader, a top foreign intelligence source said last night.
“It was an established fact from Day 1 that al-Qaeda was behind this and it was planned by its followers in Great Britain with bin Laden’s blessing,” the source told The Times.
British security officials were more guarded, saying that it was too early to say whether the plot was masterminded by some foreign hand or hatched in Britain.
The warning an al-Qaeda leader in Iraq delivered to Canon Andrew White, a British cleric working in Baghdad, in April certainly suggested that he knew of the doctors’ plot. “Those who cure you will kill you,” the man said.
The Times also learnt yesterday that Bilal Abdulla, 27, the Iraqi doctor who allegedly helped to drive a Jeep into the front of Glasgow airport last Saturday, disappeared for a year during his medical training in Baghdad. He is thought to have visited Pakistan or Lebanon.
A friend who attended the Medical College of Baghdad University with Dr Abdulla told The Times that he was a religious fanatic, and that in 2001 or 2002 he mysteriously abandoned his studies for a year.
“There was some talk that he went outside Iraq to develop his religious culture. I heard that he went to Lebanon or Pakistan,” the friend said.
On his return Dr Abdulla adopted a much more intense demeanour and isolated himself from his former friends. “He became more radical, but not to the degree that he took part in actual actions or clashes. He kept silent and became more isolated. He prayed and he kept himself away from the rest of the group.”
Dr Abdulla was born in Britain, where his father was working as a doctor, and has a British passport. His family returned to Baghdad when he was 5. He showed religious leanings from an early age, attending Friday prayer each week and even sounding the call to prayer from his grandfather’s mosque.
At medical school he fell in with “a group of radicals and extremists”. “They carried extremist thoughts,” said a friend, who also went to the elite college. “They had beards and talked about religion. He was against people wearing Western clothes and asked female doctors to put on a headscarf and gloves.”
After he graduated in 2004 he went overseas — the friend did not know where — and finally turned up in Scotland, where he worked at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley.
Dr Abdulla appears to have met some of the extremists during several periods he spent living in Cambridge. Police are presently searching several properties in the city.
One of those suspects is Khalid or Kafeel Ahmed, the man with whom Dr Abdulla drove a jeep into Glasgow airport. Mr Ahmed is thought to be another key figure, but he remains critically ill in the Royal Alexandra hospital in Paisley and his true role and identity remain unclear.
He was originally believed to be a doctor working at that hospital and the brother of Sabeel Ahmed, 26, the Indian doctor arrested in Liverpool last Saturday.
The Australian Medical Association said yesterday that a Khalid Ahmed applied numerous times, using slightly different names, to work as a doctor for the Western Australia Department of Health between February 2005 and January 2006. He was repeatedly rejected because his professional qualifications and character references were inadequate.
“It was quickly picked up in the process that he was the same bloke,” a spokesman said.
Sabeel Ahmed also applied to work for the Western Australia Department of Health in January 2006. He made one unsuccessful application.
A cousin of Sabeel Ahmed in Bangalore told The Times yesterday that he did not have a brother called Khalid but did have one called Kafeel.
Investigators are still trying to piece together precisely how the eight suspects knew one another, but sources told The Times that a few could soon be released without charge.
A week after the event it also remains unclear whether the plot was directed from overseas or hatched by conspirators in Britain. “It’s just too early to tell,” a source said.
While Dr Abdulla appears to have been radicalised long before he arrived in Britain, other suspects may have been converted to the cause of Islamic militancy while living here.
The Government’s new Office of Security and Counter-Terrorism is engaged in an intensive search for the “trigger point” that persuades Muslims who may dislike Britain’s role in Iraq or the Middle East to engage in terrorist plots against the state.

Sir,
A commendable start by Dr Zaman, but I am sure that he is innocent. Vicarious atonement, where does it end, firstly apologise for the actions of some Muslims, secondly for some Americans, then humanity throughout history? G*d.
SC, London, United Kingdom
Western policies have supported muslims always. UK is full of muslims from every country. These one day will bring its downfall. UK always supported terrorism against hindus (remember the sikh problem, LTTE are based in London, the guy who shot anwar sadat was based in UK) When indian army kills militants in kashmir, uk media claims that they have committed atrocities. even amnesty international screams its head off.
radha shyam, durham, uk
Well they were Indians ,but muslims. Most Muslims have no loyalty to their non-muslim nations (exceptions are there though)
radha shyam, durham, uk
Instead Brood Over Why an Educated youth in his Prime of life would like to do something like this? There is a vaccum in Muslim Leadership. Very soon we may see the same kind of sights that we seen on our TV screens of palestinians, throwing stones and triggering suicide bombs, all because of their helplessness and the deaf world around them. Let not the Muslims around the world feel the same and get into a situation like that before its too late.
Javeed Ahmed M, Hyderabad, India
it is the fault of uk giovernment in issuing uk visas .when a respectable literate resposible well placed hindu from india applies for a short term visa with a written statement that he or she will return back to india after the confrence or training the embassey people view them with suspicion where as these people like haneef a nd his friends get visas very easily .the very basis of issuing visas need to be revamped

As an Indian working in the UK, I feel deeply ashamed at the manner in which these TERRORISTS have sullied the good name of India, a great and tolerant nation. Their wanton, evil and fanatically warped minds probably thought this would help their pathetic cause (whatever that may be), but they have only helped widen the schism between communities. Perhaps that WAS their agenda--perhaps they DID want to tear apart the fragile fabric of inter-community and inter-religion relations. Whatever their bigoted objective, these fanatical zealots have failed dismally. I only wish the UK had the death penalty so an example could be made of these people.
Sandeep, Birmingham, UK
Involvement of doctors in jehadi activities is not new for Islamic world .Ayman al-Zawahiri second in command of al-queda is also a surgeon. For them , killing people of other religion brings religious satisfaction, and this will not change till their religious textbook is rewritten--- and that will never happen in the near future. In last 20-30 years starting from Iran to pakistan -countries have only gone backwards -preaching language of hatred.
Involvement of Indian Muslim doctors is howver shocking but then this is an age of globalisation .Our Govt shold do rigorus background checks on the doctors as 2 of the arrested brothers were members of the extremist muslim banned organisation in India before coming to UK.
Shashi, Leeds,
Bin Laden is dead. Everyone knows it.

Attacking unarmed civilians even in times of war was never done by Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him).
Muslims are asked to fight in defence if they are attacked and fight with those who are bearing arms NOT unarmed.
I just do not understand where these bombers are getting their teachings? Just read Quran and study life of Prophet Mohammad and get guidence yourself rather than listening to miscraents.
Shams Khan, New Jersey, USA / NJ
Dr Zaman
I am angry and frustrated at having my beliefs tarnished by those who use the name of Islam to seek martyrdom through killing innocent people. This must surely be the most selfish and cruel act imaginable in the name of religion.
I personally will not tolerate any extreme views of so called Muslim brothers and sisters and will contact the police without hesitation.
I believe that islamic and western values are complimentary in many aspects and my family and I like many others are living a peaceful integrated way.
These extremists need to be isolated and identified.
Only then will western foreign policy will change to a more just and inclusive one.
asim, london, UK
Dear Les, You are wrong when you wrote 'Islam does not encourage indiscriminate murder '. Islam is a religion based on violence and cold blooded murder. You have reference in the life of their Prophet Mohammed himself. I shall give you the names of the books to refer to for this tomorrow as i dont have them ready at hand.
How can a religion based on crime bring peace to world ?
Shivaji Adhikari, Mangalore, India
I fear Dr Zaman's words are falling on deaf ears. Judging by many of the comments on here and on other forums the subtle, yet constant, anti-muslim and anti-'axis of evil' propoganda that we in the West are being fed is working its way into every part of our society. Remember Dr Zaman, in the same way that these terrorists only ever hear one side of the story we only ever hear the other.
Rod Munch, Northampton, UK
The problem is and always has been religion itself and the meaningless search for a perceived truth that does not exist. I have nothing but contempt for religion and the stupidity of it all, to those that follow in these mindless superstitions I say HAVE SOME FAITH.... IN HUMANITY...because religion itself is not faith it is a weakness that poisons the mind...

R C of Florida.Quran is almost 1400 years old book. This nmever happened before as it is not in Quran. There is nothing in Quran which justifies any injustice, killing is a much bigger issue.Unfortunately during the last forty years some muslims have chosen to misrepresent the Quran to become leaders for selfish gains.

I don't remember having any Islamic terrorist attacks in UK, before the Iraq/Afghanistan wars.

What a mess! The UK has 5,000 newly qualified doctors who can't find employment because of a botched government computer system, whilst at the same time the UK has employed doctors from abroad. Apart from communication difficulties with some patients, we now find a few of those foreign doctors are intent on murder. It is a disaster for patients, good foreign doctors intent on helping the NHS and unemployed newly qualified british doctors.
N Reed, Truro,
I remember the Muslims literally screaming at and spitting on us as we left Mass at Westminster Cathedral last year during the nonsense over the cartoon. I especially remember their signs: "Jesus is the slave of Mohammed."
I also remember being prevented from getting to work by another huge Muslim demonstration nearby in which children were dressed by their parents as suicide bombers, and their signs promised us that "When Mujahedeen come storming, Europe will come crawling." Strangely, only the two people trying to pass out copies of the offending cartoon-- so we could make up our own minds-- were arrested...
I have to say, I would love to be troubled by a few Muslim demonstrations now. I keep hearing how "real" Muslims oppose this nonsense. We all have yet to see it.
It is time for you to take to the streets. It is time for Muslims to act with the same outrage when innocents are slaughtered, as when a cartoon turban appears in a foreign newspaper.

I refuse to believe this until bin-laden's 'original' (i.e, not fake) video appears on youtube claming this to be true.

Mrs C tong, London,
I was appalled to read that Khaleel and Sabil are brothers and that they grew up in Bangalore! This was in Times of India. This is anachronism to me as a former Bangalorean. I grew up there and had experienced while in college that people did not flaunt or show adherence to any religion. It was a private matter. It was a completely secular set up then. If the TOI comments are to be true, it will cause immense suffering to the families of the perpetrators, who appear to be doctors and generally well read & accomplished. Small mercies that this was a botched up terror campaign.
RAM, Scottsdale, USA
How come these people are rejected to work in Australia, but come to the UK and are handed a job in a golden plate, no questions asked? If they are willing to commit mass murder what is stopping them to do it on a patient by patient basis? Are there any controls? Do we blindly put ourselves in the hand of people more interested to kill us than to cure us? Is really scary.
Mary, London, England
This is an English newspaper - why are all these Americans writing on this. Go away Americans and bother your own newspapers - England is for the English.
I know, the Americans have already conquered most of the world with their vile culture (MacDonalds, Coke, etc) is this all you can contribute to the world. We English give you Shakesphere, and you give us MacDonalds, says it all about Americans - what have they done for the world

I wonder who this "top foreign intelligence source" is who has the ear Osama bin Laden, the most wanted man in the world.
Anyway isn't he supposed to be dead.
Will, Leicester,
you know, it's only ignorance that allows people to believe this nonsense.
Paul, Vancouver, Canada
I ama practicing Muslim and I etirely believe that these bestial acts are nothing to do with Islam just as strongly as those who believe that Islam is to blame for this.
Commentators have rightly acknowledged the foreign policy factor. But, I feel taht there is another imoprtant issue here; the idea of community leadership.
Some weeks ago I saw a book being ditributed freely in London entitled: The Role of the Mosque and authored by hate preacher OMAR BAKRI! I was quite incensed by the contents and tried to get some of the so called Muslim leaders to react with a publication, since the book is targeting young people.
None of these leaders was intersted. The government has recently, rightly, abondoned the MCB. I think it is time that something is done by government as well on the issue of Islamic education. Some mechnaism, avoiding these self-appointed leaders, should be followed to consult directly with
parents.
Hassn Ali, London, UK
Bin Laden is dead. The last known picture of him was a fake. His body statisically can not last this long on dialysis. Whoever said he blessed this is telling an untruth. Of course, it plays to both sides for him to continue to be alive when he is not.
francis, los angeles,
It is by the will of God that no one died. Even the terrorist could not kill himself although he probably wishes that he were dead. In the war between good and evil, I am reminded again that God is in control.
Justin, Lubbock,
it's not religion that's bad, it's the people that follow it and twist it to their means. On the surface of it, it's best to believe in nothing, then if you hurt someone at least you're not using religion as an excuse and you get seen for what you really are, someone that needs help.
We have to face facts, man can be really nasty. We've been like this since the dawn of time, to think otherwise is to forget the events of history.
We like to think we can help and have the perfect society, but honestly, you can't please everyone. In trying to do so you'll only annoy the people that feel someone else is being helped more.
Religion is a waste of time to me, to some it brings hope and for that it's good, but for most, it seems to bring pain and suffering. The basic message of be good to others, don't kill etc etc, are standard morals, not religious morals. If God was so good, why would he let his cihldren suffer so much?
simon, lincoln,
Dr Zaman is right; these people are a fanatical minority dead set on destroying the fabric of society through fear and loathing of others. However, he need not be afraid that he will be tarred with the same brush. Northern Ireland is a beacon to all, showing the way to true religious coexistence, a long bloody conflict there was brought to an end by the community wide condemnation of violence on all sides. A similar solution will be found to the problem of Islamic fanaticism if we all regardless of race or religion condemn extremism in all its forms. The doctrine and teachings of the Torah, the Holy Bible and the Holy Koran are similar in roundly condemning violence towards fellow man. Islam certainly does not encourage indiscriminate murder and the thoughtless destruction and desecration of symbols of other religions. The people of all nations whatever their fundamental religion should now join in condemning such acts of violence and start right now isolating the these thugs.
Les Tanner, Bangkok, Thailand
Dr zaman's comments are inappropriate. First, no one has been charged yet. So how does Dr Zaman presume that they are all guilty? Next, of course many Muslims have and continue to commit crimes of varying magnitude. But at the same time over the last century or so, Muslim lands (countries with Muslim majorities) have been either directly under the yoke of Western powers or indirectly through their agents (the dictators, kings and sheikhs). Outside the Middle East, Indonesia was for many years ruled by the dictator Suharto, supported and sustained by the USA. Where countries have not been interfered with e.g. Malaysia, they have thrived. Today, the USA has troops in 100 or more ( this was so even before 9/11) countries. Why? When 9/11 happened, Bin laden T-shirts were selling fastest not in the Middle East but in South America. Why? Because they remember the decades when the USA armed military dictatorships in South America. Dr Zaman has been fed a surfeit of American TV.
Dr Najib Yusuf, Isleworth, Middlesex
Dear Dr. Zaman,
Nice to read your comment which according to me is absolutely right. I must say that these kind of act raises questions to entire community whereas the rest of community has nothing to do with it.
There has to be a better and more civilized way of protests instead of voilence. I feel pitty about the family members who must now facing something that they had nothing to do with.
History teaches us that voilence has never solved problems for long.
Dr. Zaman, I am sure that people still respect the good doctors. A handful bad guys cannot make the entire community look bad. Please continue giving the best to the society.
Deepak Sharma, Mumbai, India
Dr Zamen
I hope so much that the Muslim community takes heed of your thoughtful and I suspect very accurate comments. This type of thinking could revolutionise the world. I do hope you continue to speak up. Thank you for your courage ata time when courage to think in a different way is so badly needed.
Judith Balcazar, London, UK
Dr. Zaman, my heart hurts for you, and other decent and noble healers, and Muslims, who are doubly cursed, by association with these insane ideologues and fanatics.
I have known, and worked alongside many wonderful muslim doctors, who have devoted their lives to helping others. It is a disgrace that these bad seeds would seek to bring such shame to so many good people. It is a sin against God that they bring death to the innocent, when it is the quiet dignity of men like you, who are overlooked, and now, must bear this shame.
It is distressing that there are not more passionate pleas to stop this insanity, but, sir, your words, alone, pierce the darkness, and bring hope to enlightened souls. Your words bring my heart some comfort, even though the world we know is ending. At least not everyone is evil and insane.
May God help us to learn how to love our brothers, and fellow human beings. Anything less than this is blasphemy.
Michele Bond, ft. lauderdale florida, usa
Dr Zaman in the comment above asks, 'How is that does not raise anger among us?' One of the criticisms levelled at Muslims here in the UK (and no doubt elsehwere) is that there isn't a huge upsurge of visible anger at what some in their midst are doing. This leads to the inference that there is no real opposition to it. I don't believe there is no such opposition, but it's time those Muslims who are happy to adapt to Western ways and become part of Western culture actually showed their opposition if it is there. Let's see some banner waving in support of Salman Rushdie's knighthood and in favour of a newspaper's right to print cartoons, even if some people choose to be offended by them. Let those reasonable Muslims stand up and be counted as rational thinkers rather than those guided by semiliterate imams who know the Koran and nothing else.
Andrew Armitage, West Wales, UK
Observing for many years how many (not allof course) Muslim boys are reared...very often with no discipline...even at times a boy of 8 or 9 can tell his mother what to do...not to mention how he treats his sister(s), it 's no wonder they don't want to take the blame for anything... they are 'above it all'...they are men (sic). When the father gets involved, he's by that time in a rage, and often beats the child harshly. This has got to play some role in men not feeling responsible for their actions and take the blame or responsibility...
Roger Malstead, Wenatchee, WA, USA
1. The above case clearly demonstrates the failure of British immigration and visa procedures and policies.
2. It is strange to hear for the first time: âThose who cure you will kill you.â It has become very hard due to the callous and inhuman actions of some jihadi Muslims to trust any Muslim including doctors. Time has come for Muslims to rectify this situation before it is too late.
3. Moderate and sane Muslims should rebel against their religious preachers/mullahs/imams preaching hatred against other religions. Unless non-Muslims notice some concrete actions, the mutual suspicion between Muslims and non-Muslims will only increase. This is not a good scenario for all sane civilized people of the world.
4. The excuses forwarded by the relations of terrorists or claiming innocence has become a common phenomenon. Instead they should call a spade, spade. These relations and their friends are only complicating the issues. We are witnessing this joke in India on two doctors.
Krishna R. Kumar, Udupi, India
Thank you Dr. F Q Zaman, for the sentiments you expressed, surely a view shared by all sensible people. It seems to me that if the muslims don't do as you suggest and deal with this religeous problem there is absolutely no hope for peace in the world, least of all for the moslem countries that arepromoting and financing this stupidity
Like you I don't understand the logic where Islamic teachers who can seemingly entice and mesmerise even well educated people to kill themselves while killing other in innocent people including even there own fellow Moslem's..(but rarely themselves I notice).
Doesn't the Koran give a solution to dealing with the zealots?

Pandering on the emotional vulnerability of muslim youth, their psychological immaturity and their "hot headedness" is so obvious to the outsider. Why do we not see middle aged clerics blowing themselves up? Or the elderly muslims who are wise to life and see the value of life?
The muslim youth need to be aware that they are dispensible pawns in a game - so cruel.

Dr.Zaman is a sane voice in a crowd of intolerants. Muslims are ruing the cause of Islam. I myself being a Hindu , have experienced the effects of Islamic terrorism in India . Due these insensitive and unrational acts we honest and hardworking people from the continent will be ostracised further due to no fault of ours. I only wish there were more people like Dr.Zaman who practise Islam in an meaningful way.

Dear Dr. Zaman,
I am heartened with your comments. Unfortunately, it seems that the majority of your Muslim brothers and sisters fail to recognize what you say. Just because you find it hard to believe does not mean that it is not the truth. Don't ignore the fact that Religions have two types of 'moral rules':
The natural humanist kind, common to all religions and secular philosophies.
And the religiously unique: The cruel and intolerant morals dictating the wrongness of all other opinions - these are the ones that cause the friction and it's not just Islam: Christian bombings of Abortion clinics, homosexual persecution etc

All these suspects who are not ried in court, if foreign nationals, should be deported immediately with no appeal.
Dr Nick Ashley, Huntingdon, England
Dr Zaman, you are not responsible for what these men have done, any more than a law abiding Christian is responsible for Timothy McVeigh blowing up the Murrah Building in Oklahoma City or Eric Rudolph bombing abortion clinics. With all the hate and destruction in the world I believe that each of us must, in our own way, continue to try to do what is right . As a doctor you should be very proud that you have devoted your life to healing and helping humankind. We have no control over what some crazy person is going to do, but we all have control over what we do. I choose to love and to do my part to make a positive contribution toward mankind. We need to stop thinking of the world in terms of "them" and "us," and begin thinking in terms of "we."

Yeah, Osama gave his blessing, all right. And don't forget -- Iran has a death star. Did you get that? A DEATH STAR!!!
On a more serious note, it's well known that Al Qaeda is the creation of the CIA and MI6. So can you figure out who the "real terrorists" are?
Three guesses, and the first two don't count.
Big M, Detroit,
Do not be fooled by the conclusion to this article. These people do not attack Britain because of its role in the Middle East. They attack Britain because it is a symbol of that which is not yet Islamic. The tool of extremist Islam is the sword. The trigger point is their religious teaching and leadership.
James Stoertz, Winston-Salem, NC, USA
Fortunately the Quran makes no mention nor gives any intsructions for carrying out attacks on innocent people. The twisted minds of criminals and terrorists have always claimed to be committing their acts in the name of Islam, when it is clearly not the case. As a muslim, I am myself fed-up with these terrorists, but only the security services can take action against them and should have done so a long time ago. Terrorists don't care whom they kill or maim. This is evident when we see how suicide bombs kill without discrimintaion both muslims and non-muslims. Its surprising that people including muslims migrate to western countries, benefit themselves economically and yet despise the country they live in. The actions of a few give the rest of muslims a bad name.
amir, london, uk
RC of Florida. Quran does not advocate, condone or justify killing innocents under any circumstances, and indeed it is against any kind of injustice. It states clearly that there is no compulsion in religeon. But people with ulterior motives say things that are not there and unfortunately most of the muslims are illiterate and have really no idea about what is in Quran. That, ofcourse is our(Muslims) fault and we are responsible for it by indifferece,

2) Blacks are robbers
3) Asians are terrorist.

Fanatics have always used religion or dogma as a kind of sanction to do what they want. Withess The Crusaders, the Spanish Inquisiition, Cromwell, Colonialism, Hitler and Stalin.
They all waited until they hade the necessary power to indulge in their blood baths.
These young men with twisted minds have no power, they are instead frustrated and willing to die violently, taking a host of infidels with them. The problem is not simply that they wish revenge upon any country which has participated in the "Wars". That is an excuse. They want one thing
only; to force us all to be islamites.
Finally I trust that their confusion, frustration and bad judgment will lead to nothing worse that the same damp fireworks of last week, if it does happen again.

When are we going to wake up in this country,it now transpires one of the bombers was born in the UK and entered the country freely to treat the sick.
Why are medical professionals not vetted for their extreme beliefs before they then mix freely amongst the general public trying to kill them.
Which other professions are harbouring such people under our very noses.

âIt was an established fact from Day 1 that al-Qaeda was behind this and it was planned by its followers in Great Britain with bin Ladenâs blessing,â the source told The Times. "
Who is this anonymous "top" intelligence source and what proof do they offer other than their assertion, given that Bib Laden has already been reportted dead for many years now.
The rest of this article offers no support for this eye catching headline. Something smells I feel.

I know that the vast majority of the followers of Islam are peaceful, law-abiding and caring people. Dr. Zaman - it is encouraging to hear your views, and your respect and belief in the true tenets of Islam. The difficulty is, how to promote those tenets of peaceful living, and to diminish the radical and aggressive distortion of those beliefs by the tiny minority. Sadly, no matter how much we know in our minds that the Moslem standing next to us in the street, the shop, the railway, the hospital etc. is seeking only to live their life in peace, it becomes difficult not to cast a wary eye on them and wonder 'Is he/she one of 'them'. This must be even more painful to those living in places like Baghdad, where their neighbours are supposed to share the same beliefs.
I do not know how the Islamic community can become 'militant' in promoting peace, but I do hope and pray that the desires of Dr. Zaman and others like him can be taken on board for the benefit of all - in every country

To Dr.Zaman:
You can expect you patients to respect you for what you are....a good and caring physician. Patients are a lot more discerning than one might think. They can easily "read you" in your patient interactions. Over a few visits, they can tell if your character and integrity meets with their approval and they will appreciate you for your knowledge of healing and your compassion.

I find it so hard to believe that a man could make such terrible plans to kill and maim in the name of religion. Any religion.
What REALLY motivates these people? Decent people have every reason to blame the Muslim religion but this is unfair and not the truth.
It's easy to understand a man wanting revenge for some perceived event but these monsters don't seem to have this motivation either.
It's just bestial behaviour that is quite inexcusable.
richard, bangkok,
Dr Zaman, not only Muslims use their faith as an blind excuse to inflict their lust for power on innocent people. It has been done in the name of Christianity too. Those who do not approve of religion being used as a cloak for power games and wars must refuse to accept it. It is not something that Western Muslims have so far had to do but I think the time has now come for those who oppose fanaticism to stand up and make their position clear. That will provide an organised opposition and give Muslim people themselves a chance to join a Muslim group which stands for moderation. Right now I would imagine it is hard for many moderate Muslims to know what to do, as they don't want to be branded as non religious. There are signs of hope now that Muslims are starting to speak out against the distortion of their faith by these fanatics. The slogan I have seen used is "Not In My Name"
Jenny , London,
Dr Zaman how refreshing to read those words , FROM A MUSLIM.!
Where are all the others like you ???
Why, as you say, can't they see & admit the problems of Muslims killing Muslims ? Whatever mistakes were made in Iraq [ now well recognised ] it is Sunni agains't Shia causing death & mayhem today.
Look at Pakistan & the brutality taking place there.
I feel as long as men are all grouped together in such large numbers as they are in the Muslim world, there are bound to be struggles for supremacy. Also, as long as there is reward in heaven for ridding the world of infidels it will continue.

Dear Dr. Zaman, you are right, Muslims must work with all peace-loving peoples to find and remove these radicals from society. I'm afraid more and more people will look down upon Muslims as a group unless your community takes a stronger stand on the issue of terror and where it is coming from. Keep helping people as a physician and keep trying to get through to other Muslims. Don't give up. God bless you.

Dr. Zaman,
Change will have to come from within, please take your message farther than this. You have shown great courage with this attitude. I will try to keep an open mind based on what you have said. I never would have suspected doctors of being capable of this previously. I lived in the UK as well, and doctors of all nationalities were afforded the highest respect. I ask why do so many Muslims flee their nations to live in Britain, Germany, France, America, and then try to change them into the nation they fled? Why do these people not want to integrate? I think Islam is going to have to go through a long overdue reformation or else it will find itself at war with the world. Perhaps that is what these people want.
Brian, Atlanta,
Well said, Dr.F Q Zaman. However, unless the Quran itself is changed.., nothing will change.

We have several very excellent Muslim physicians at the hospitals where I work, and I am afraid this will affect patients accepting their care to some degree. We'll have to see. I already have had some patients who requested non-Middle Eastern physicians after Sept. 11, 2001 occurred, but that request died down after a while.

Thank you Dr. Zaman, Well said. We have be waiting for so long for the Muslim community to speak out against the radical elements. When we refuse to speak out then we become just as guilty. " Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them." Romans 1:32

Oh, great.
Helen, London,
Dr Zaman...why is your voice not the one we hear on a regular basis? Where are the other people who think as you do?
How refreshing. Thank you.

Dear Dr. Zaman,
Thank you for saying what needs to be said. I can sense your anguish. All I can offer is for you to keep doing what you're doing. Join hands with people of good will, and keep banging the drum.

The Trigger Point among these individuals is their belief in the Koran which extols the killing of "infidels" for the exultation of Allah.
The Government should focus on eliminating these individuals from the national community. Elimination should include all those who aid or support in any way those who take agressive action against the country whether they take action by technical/financial means or violent acts. It is all part of a cohesive strategy to establish the global Califate.
No amount of obfuscation as to the identity of these traitors will change who they are and the origin of their murderous behaviors. It is the Koran. Those few Muslims who may long for a different interpretation of their holy book are themselves threatened with death. Britain must wake up if it is to save itself.

We don't believe a word Dr Zaman has to say.
And we certainly would not dream of bothering to call on the good doctor for his medical services.

Taking up Dr, Zamans point I do find it hard to understand how the indiscriminate bombing of groups seeking work or just shopping in a market place could be seen in any greater beings eyes as a good dead! The selfish motivation to kill led obstensively by sex (The need for Virgins) and good food makes you wonder! Killing anyone to further your needs religious, sexual or motivated by hatred of your own or anothers (War) cannot be condoned in this day and age. I cannot help but wonder if there are other beings perhaps they have not made themselves know to us as at this point we are barbarians.

There is no excuse for this. TIme and again Islamic extremists go on a killing spree imposing their faith on others... who's going to put a stop to this? Imams and clerics brainwashing youngsters to go astray in life. Its sad that educated muslims are doing this. Its a shame. They'veno right to live, when they dont let others live. These people go to the west only to wreak destruction because of jealousy and inferiority complex. If they love bombing....let them do so in their own miserable countries.
rehan, London, UK
Dr. Zaman....take the lead. Because if someone doesn't, and the same thing starts occuring here. I dread the backlash against peace loving Muslims like yourself.
Murph, Madisonville , USA/KY
Dr Zaman -- thank you for your thoughtful comments.

I am ashamed at what these Muslim doctors did.Unfortunately ,I suffer more mental anguish than most,as I am a muslim doctor of specialist level who was happy and proud to have worked many years in the UK.The respect and love shown by the patients and public was great ,but what can one expect now?
I donot know when will we muslims realise that we have to do something constructive to improve ourselves and not destructive.Regardless of how many such stupid attempts are made, muslims will remain in miserable conditions,as we are ourselves responsible for those. Why are we not annoyed with daily killings of thousands of muslims by muslims. How is that does not raise anger among us?Somehow it is accpted our the last fifty years in Afghanistan,Iran,Iraq and other muslim countries. It seems we shall never learn as we never take blame for anything. So how are we going to correct ourselves,if we are never at fault?
