PRINCE WILLIAM is planning to do a stint as a civil servant in the Foreign Office as he casts around for a fulfilling long-term role.
He is being lined up for a desk job in Whitehall, to start after he leaves the armed forces, likely to be towards late 2009.
The plan, being finalised by palace officials, comes after a period of uncertainty. Earlier this year William split with his girlfriend, Kate Middleton, before reportedly taking steps recently to rekindle their relationship.
He suffered a snub when John Howard, the Australian prime minister, made it clear he would not be welcome in the ceremonial post of the country’s governor-general. Howard said the job should be given to an Australian.
Like his father, the Prince of Wales, William faces the prospect of waiting for decades before becoming king and is said to feel unsettled as contemporaries pursue careers.
Courtiers say he is eager to take a highly structured approach to his preparations for his future role as monarch. “[The Foreign Office job] will give him a grounding in the workings of departments which will one day act in his name,” one palace in-sider said.
“It is an ideal element in his continuing preparation for kingship. It could also be beneficial to constructive relations between the government and a future heir.”
William is expected to complete another 18 months in the army, serving as a troop leader in the Household Cavalry. At the moment he is on a tank commander’s course at Bovington in Dorset.
While William has enjoyed elements of his time in the army, it has never been considered a long-term career. One of his circle said: “He is never going to be as committed to the army as his brother. At Eton the cadets were never a passion for him.”
In 2009 he will train with the Royal Navy and the RAF, where he will learn to fly. He will then become a civilian and will be in need of a job.
His clearer “career” map coincides with a renewed closeness between William and Middleton. Last Sunday she was seen sitting in the royal box at the Concert for Diana at Wembley and the couple were later photographed at the after-show party enjoying a cocktail together.
There was speculation this weekend that Prince Harry is concerned William and Kate may rush to marry if they do get back together.
William gained a measure of financial independence on his 25th birthday last month, when he became legally entitled to an income of at least £250,000 a year accrued on the money left to him in his mother’s will. She left £13m after inheritance tax.
The prince’s planned Foreign Office placement could be followed by another civil service post in Whitehall, according to a senior royal source. It would be the first time a future monarch has worked as a civil servant.
In 2012 William will be 30 and it will also be the Queen’s diamond jubilee. In that year, courtiers expect him to take on a full round of royal engagements.
Some courtiers have also discussed the possibility of him taking over responsibility for The Prince’s Trust, created by his father.
There have been several discussions in the royal family about William’s future and it is thought the possibility of him being made governor-general of Australia emerged from those talks.
William’s desire for the post was reported by Tina Brown, the former editor of Vanity Fair, in her biography of Diana. Brown claims William had discussed the possible role with his father.
Prince Charles himself had expressed a wish to serve in the same post but this was rejected by Bob Hawke after he became prime minister of Australia in 1983. William’s ambition has been similarly rejected by Australia’s political leaders, with Kevin Rudd, the opposition leader, saying it would be “party, party, party” if William were ever given the post.
Howard, the premier, has said: “I do think the practice of having a person who is an Australian in every way and a long-term and permanent resident of this country is a practice I would not like to see altered.”
However, monarchists have pointed out that because William is destined to become the head of state, it does not make sense to deny him the post of governor-general, representing the monarch.
In a statement the group Australians for Constitutional Monarchy, which was successful in the 1999 referendum campaign to keep the monarchy, said: “The appointment of Prince William would be very popular and attract international attention.”
It also branded Rudd’s comments as disrespectful, saying the outspoken opposition of leading republican politicians had ensured it would not happen.
Last week Charles was a guest at the Foreign Office where he met David Miliband, the foreign secretary, but it is not known if William’s placement was discussed. A Foreign Office spokesman declined to comment, and Clarence House officials said it was too early to comment.

I think Prince William becoming governor general of Australia is the perfect way to prepare him for a life dedicated to the public.
Not only will he bring the monarchy closer to Australians, it will also increase the recognition of the monarchy around the globe.
Also, with his charm and wit, there are plenty of intelligent and beautiful women who would be suited to his down to earth personality and would jump at the chance to treat him like a king.

If they send him to Australia, maybe Crown Princess Mary of Denmark has a sister or cousin they could introduce him to?
In any case, I'm sure he could follow Prince Frederick's example and find a fine young woman for his bride among his grandmother's Australian subjects.

What I fail to understand is Ok, you have a Prince he's quite a celebrity, well known around the world yeah, has a famous family, is pretty intelligent, has served time in the armed forces , has organised a global concert that was screened around the world, is second in line to the throne of England, & all they can find the poor chap is a desk job in the foreign office hmmm, what happened to the good ol fashioned Prince getting involved in the peoples dillemas & rolling up the sleeves getting dirty & altogether being a romantic figure that famous authors write about. He's got a few BOB why not try & save the world dear boy? Stop kissing aussie rear & get involved with people that need help, I'm sure you are very able & talented & have all the necessary training.

I think Prince William will make a perfect candidate for the post of GG in Australia. At least it will be obvious where our tax money will be going. For prince William not to have the post contradicts his place as a future head of state for Australia.
But as an Australian, I suggest Prince William leave Kate Middleton at home. She doesn't have the characteristics for the future role of Queen. All she seems to do is "party, party, party" - Oh yeah, i forgot, shopping and taking holidays. . Having her at his side will only confirm to the Australian people that Prince William is not serious for the role. An 'Accessories Buyer" is not suitable for future role of Princess. She needs to get serious and spend more of her "free time" in charitable pursuits.

The post of GG in Australia is not 'ceremonial'.
The parliamentary set up in Australia is very different to Britain with a US style Federal system and a powerful Senate. The GG holds reserve powers which were used in 1975 to sack the Whitlam Government after the Senate blocked passing Supply
No Australian PM would appoint a foreigner as GG!

how much public money will be invested in prince williams various training? why train him in the navy and to fly planes if it is already known that he will leave. what a complete and utter waste of money!
lorraine, glasgow,
Maybe William would like to become the new govenor of Montserrat. The island could do with some help as it seems to be forgotten by the Brits, after all it is still British and you taxpayers are paying a lot of money to keep this little island afloat since the first eruption of the volcano. He can live on my property free of rent if he goes there.
Johanna Joseph, Perth, Australia
How nice for William that he won't have to undergo rounds of gruelling interviews like thousands of other much better qualified applicants who would also like to work at the foreign office. Another waste of space.

One of the nice things about being a royal is that you never
have to worry about getting a job.

Prince William has his own right of choosing his future wife, but I hope that he will think it twice until he takes an accurate decision. Nevertheless, he must remember that one day he will be King of England, perhaps when his grandmother died, she might reign for several years more and the Prince of Wales will give up his rights to succession. In such case the future Queen should be not only the woman who Prince William loves, but also a woman who is suitable for such high position. I cannot say that Miss Middleton is or not the right person to share the responsibilities as a future Queen, but I am convinced that would be better a young lady who was educated in such a way, which might fulfil all the duties as a Queen without any trouble. As Pascal said three centuries ago, the heart has reasons, which reason cannot understand. Meanwhile he must do his best for his future as the Sovereign and of the monarchy as well, a job at the FO will help him a lot to know the real world.

There is another way for William to become governor-general of Australia.
First, apply to Australia House in London for an immigrant visa and permanent residence. If granted, after the usual process, he would have to pay his own way, since the 10 pound 'assisted passage' for 'Poms' is long gone. Once there he can apply for citizenship after the required period of 4 years of unbroken residency. If approved, after he has taken the new 'citizenship test' and passed it, he can swear an oath of allegiance to Australia. Since he does not have to renounce his British citizenship he can still become King eventually.
Once all these steps have been taken, like all other Aussie citizens, he can wait to be asked if he wishes to become governor-general. Simple, isn't it?
Meanwhile, Australians for Constitutional Monarchy would turn up every day to worship at the door of his flat.
gulfbridge, London,
I think that William is making the right movements in his future career by continuing into the Foreign Office. He should be given an equal opportunity for the Australian post. He has proved that he is the future , and as he is unable to have the freedom serving for his country then it is obvious that much thought has been given about this by himself. Also I think Kate plays a very important part in these decisions. Let the couple have private time together, and they will decide if their future is together. Best wishes William , your mum would be so proud of you, and thank Harry and yourself for the wonderful tribute made to her on what would have been her 46th Birthday. Kate , continue being yourself, and never let the Royal household make the decisions.
