Despite a massive security operation, the final book of the Harry Potter series has been leaked online three days before its worldwide release.
Neil Blair, a lawyer for the author JK Rowling, confirmed today that some genuine material from the seventh Harry Potter book had been posted on the internet - but said that there was also much bogus content circulating.
It is the first time that material from any of the hugely successful boy wizard books has leaked onto the internet before publication. The book itself goes on sale in bookstores around the world on Friday at midnight, before when all copies are supposed to be closely guarded.
For the past two days, photographs of what are claimed to be pages of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows have appeared on a number of file-sharing websites.
One set of images purports to show each of the 36 chapters - and a seven-page epilogue - from a 759-page version thought to be the American edition, published by Scholastic.
According to people who have read that version, several characters meet their end and others get married. Rowling herself has revealed only that two major characters die.
In one of the photos, still available on several sites, a hand is seen holding the book open at the bottom of each double-page spread as it is photographed above a patch of carpet.
Another, which purports to be the opening of Chapter 23, entitled 'Malfoy Manor', shows the first sentence as starting: "Harry looked around at the other two..."
A 33-year-old Canadian man who claims to have downloaded hundreds of the book's pages from one of the so-called 'Torrent' sites, told a Canadian news service : "What some guy did was take pictures of it, 500 little files, each with a picture of a page. Someone took the trouble to do that."
Today, a search for 'Harry Potter Hallows' on one of the largest so-called 'Torrent' sites, isoHunt, revealed 61 hits, many of which claimed to be the 'Full Book'.
In the past, several 'spoiler' attempts claim to have released plot details prior to a book's publication, but a manuscript itself has never been procured and posted online.
A spokeswoman for Bloomsbury, the book's UK publisher, would not confirm or deny today that the leaked version was the real thing, but said that "vast quantities" of material purporting to be the book were circulating.
"People are being very clever putting stuff online. There are many different versions and it's easy to use Photoshop [photo editing software] to make something look very real. We're asking people not to spoil the book for fans," she said. "We're getting phone calls from people in tears saying: 'I don't want to find out what happens.'"
A spokesman for Scholastic, the book's US publisher, said: "There's so much out there that is confusing for fans. Our lawyers are trying to keep down the amount of spoiler traffic and clear it from places where fans might be reading."
Harry Potter fan sites such as theleakycauldron.org, and mugglenet.com have vowed to keep spoiler material off their pages.
William Hill, the bookmaker, said today that it had stopped taking all bets on who would die in the book because it could no longer be sure punters had not already read the final chapters.
"Up until now the list of insiders was probably less than ten, but now that's obviously no longer the case," a spokesman for the firm said.
Meanwhile in internet forums, a war of words raged as to whether the version that had been posted was genuine.
"Yes its real, yes it works, yes its in a pdf. Have fun," one comment on thepiratebay.org read.
Another user wasn't so sure: "I'm going to have the burst the bubble on this being real. I was positive it was, until I found this on page 156: "Auntie Muriel, who seemed to be enjoying herself *hugely*, snapped her fingers for more champagne." To my knowledge, the word 'hugely' does not exist. Surely, a book as anticipated as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows would have been edited multiple times."
"Hugely" is a rather common British expression," a rebuttal came back. "Nothing strange about it."
More than two million copies of the Deathly Hallows have been pre-ordered on Amazon, and the Royal Mail has said it expects to deliver 600,000 books on release day - about one for every 100 people in the UK.

The publishers should have leaked fake spoilers and fake endings long ago, then people wouldn't have known what to believe and this whole furor could've been avoided.
Richard, Vancouver,
How are people spoiling the book for you? Unless you look for the book/spoilers yourself, in which case you claim the consequences of reading anything spoiler worthy for yourself.
It is one thing to accuse copyright infringement, and another thing to accuse purposeful destruction of another's pleasure. Especially when that destruction is derived from the choices the victim made.

Did Ron die? I read another source, dunno if its true
Jesse, Bunbury, WA
I read it while hoping, as many others did, that it was a fake. Unfortuatly, it is definatly real and the details described in the leaked pages are too original and thought-out to be a hoax. To be honest, they should have guarded this book more carefully. Even in the devil wears prada movie, the story goes that the new harry potter manuscript was leaked out very easily within minutes of request, which turns out to be very much true.
kann davison, LONDON,
Having read the latest Potter book in PDF form I am amazed that somebody could be bothered to photograph all 760+ pages. Even with two pages to every photo it must have taken quite a while.
As the photographers fingertips appear on each photo and his shirt sleeve makes the occasional appearance I am sure some eager slueths will soon be able to name him.
Despite claims that this is the last in the series I think it is safe to assume there will be more stories featuring Harry and pals, even if they are not actually written by Ms. Rowling. (Did not something similar happen in the case of Gone With The Wind? And how many authors have penned a james Bond novel?)

I don't really see why people are all hurt by this. So what. people told you what happens. It happened last year when (get ready for it people....) snape killed dumbledore. Honestly, everyone, its a book.
1) everyone is going to find out anyway, no matter what order.
2) Finding out the "ending" isn't that shocking. While I respect Rowlings for the amount of people who have begun to read because of her book (in fact, I'm rather grateful... people should read) I'm not going to pretend that it would be hard for someone to accurately right a fanfiction along similar lines to what she actually wrote. 3/4 of what I saw as "spoilers" looked to have been copy/pasted from Fanfiction.net
3) don't go over the top at these people spreading "spoilers" sure, maybe sue the ones who created them / originally posted them...... if you can find them. but going after the people who spread the rumors is just a overly vindictave attempt at revenge.
and if you don't want to know, don't read it. easy.
Sean, castaic,
Mrs. rowling, who is a very wealthy woman now (thanx to
harry), should have forseen, by all means, that a relevant
spoiler would show up.
She should have put the beginning chapters of HPATDH
into the net, starting with may 07, under the condition, that
the eager readers donate a specific sum (via credit card)
to a charity organisation........THAT would have shown, that
she is not only a competent writer, but also willing to share
her wealth (at least partly).
i personally cherish the "democracy" of the net !

It's a BOOK for crying out loud. Fiction! Get some perspective.
Richard, Reading,
The interesting thing is the posted images still contain the camera's EXIF data, which have the camera's serial number, which means the guy that took the pics can probably be traced. Oh dear for him....
Alex Kerr, London, UK
I confess, I've got it and read it (the full thing, all 700 and odd pages)... and I'm hoping it's a hoax, although it seems unlikely due to the writing style and formatting. If it is a hoax, it's an incredibly elaborate one. I thought it was awful.
As for all these people crying about having the book spoiled... for goodness sake, just don't download it! If you see something you don't like on the telly, you switch over, don't you? Nobody is standing with a gun to your head forcing you to read blurred, over-flashed JPEGs out loud...
Having had a copy pre-ordered since December last year, I have paid my cash and having seen the quality of the American books (great illustrations, fonts and general formatting), I'm glad I've only paid the Amazon price!
I'll check my copy on Saturday to make sure what I read was the real deal, then I will spend the day shopping in the knowledge that there will be fewer kids about!
Shame bets are closed... I could have solved my uni funding problem!

me ,as a adult,no mood to care the end destiny of Harry,i just want to know the exact ratio of reader willing to download the book, which would influence the turnover of the author,or the meaning under the law,it belong to illegal of not, instinctively,i think it is wrong,or maybe the mean to promote the new one,who know,if someone know where i can download it, just let me know thank you!

You shouldn't worry about spoilers. Just enjoy the writing. I've been constantly amazed at how JKR has adjusted the style of her writing so that it ages as her audience ages. I've also very much enjoyed how she wove details in the plot of the various books from one to another, both forwards and and backwards. I personally plan to read the beginning, the end, and then the middle. This is how I normally read a book and I don't see any need to change for Harry. The fun (and the artistry) is not in the destination but in the journey.
Jean, Seattle, USA/WA
I think that it was so mean and hurtful to j. k. rowling to spoil her hard work and efforts to keep the book quite with the person only doing it for the money. If i got a early copy of the book it might have been tempting to read it for my self but I would never think on spoiling it for the whole world. I even wouldn't read it because it wouldn't be fair but I would say I did just to make my sister jealous. I just can't believe someone would do that.
William Smith, Dallas, USA, Tx
for me,personally,i would have read the ending first anyway.(i know,i know!!)
but i think it's a pathetic individual who has ruined this whole thing for a LOT of people...and for WHAT? what could possibly be gained by this?
i hope they find him or her and that they are prosecuted to the fullest.....
sherri, casselberry, florida
Just to clear something up that makes me crazy - JKR never said "two characters die" as in ONLY two characters die. She said (and I quote) JKR: "The final chapter is hidden away, although it has now changed very slightly. One character got a reprieve, but I have to say two die that I didn't intend to die." So, there could be lots of death - but the two she's referring to were not in the original plans.... The media loves to say "two main characters die" but I don't see where she's ever said that..... As for those posting the spoilers, I hope they get what they deserve - first fans should have a go at them, then the law
Jam, Teaneck, NJ
I really hope the book images that were on-line aren't the real deal because the writing in those was so horrible and childlike that I'll be deeply disappointed in JK if that was the actual book (I admit I read them with great shame). That epilogue was like some of the worst fan fiction I've read. I won't say anything else about it but I'm really praying that was a creation from one of those fanatic...crazies out there.
LaReina, Florida, USA
My roommate received the book in the mail yesterday! Some malfunction. She cancelled her order because it was backordered for 3 weeks, and then received it 3 days early. MUST have been a mistake! She is already half way done.
Joellen, Charleston, SC
and promptly deleted it. on another note, i have to wonder how amazon are going to manage to deliver the hundreds of thousands of books they have schduled for immediate delivery on saturday morning. i live in the middle of nowhere, and hope that mine gets delivered!! only time will tell...
samuel gosney, reading, uk
i was asked by some people to look at the file, and see what I thought. I've checked out standard pages such as inside covers and page patterns as well as font encryptions on my computer, and I can tell you that either this file is real, or the people who made it put in a Hell of a lot of effort to make it how it is. even the margin side is comparible to the mm to the previous books.
samuel gosney, reading, uk
Honestly, I don't care if people tell me the ending of a book. If I was going to read I still would and it would not matter. It is not the ending that matters but rather the journey to the end. Personally, I think J.K. Rowling is a mediocre writer, and the reason people are obsessed with the ending is because the journey is not exciting enough.
Venus, Boston, MA
02 days 01 hours 40 minutes 43 seconds until Book 7! Woot!
A friend of mine has read it, and now he's got to keep quiet about it until the book comes out, otherwise people will hit him. Where's the fun in that?
starling, Lancaster,
I'm reading the book now - so sorry to JKR it's so out of order to her. Even Harries owl dies....
Dan, surrey, uk
If you don't want to spoil it. Don't go looking for it. Any one down loading it will probably still buy it to find out if it was the original any way. Either way it is an excellent marketing tool.

It's natural for people to steal on the internet. They also lie. Anyone who wants to stay on the net has to get used to people like this. Probably none of it is real. If it is real I don't see what the big deal is. If you don't want to know don't go looking for it. If you do want to know don't be a blabber mouth. Honestly it's just a book and there's no sense in crying over it. There are people with no food or clean water in this world and here is some people crying over some book.
I admit I'm excited but for a different reason. I'm alot like Harry. He's about to be free of his aunt and uncle and I'm about to move out of the house. I had a good time at the last book bash so I'm looking forward to the next one. It's just fun. I like events where the young and the old participate. To the fundimentalists who are against what JK Rowling has done, I say she is an English teacher and her job is to make children want to read. She's done that. Even this illiterate.
Katz Heitmann, Raleigh, USA
Same as Sam: would never bother to take a look, it's the book that I'm waiting for. This is not even a "spoiler"; it's outright larceny!
Vinny, İstanbul, Turkey
This is all very sad.
It's one thing to cheat and steal for the sake of profit (we see examples of that every day), but to do it just for the purpose of spoiling other people's pleasure is mean and unconscionable. Perhaps this is a story that should not have been reported, since that only gives greater distribution possibilities?
Malcolm Scarratt, Bragg Creek, Alberta, Canada
I personally would never bother to download this file weather or not it was geniune simply b/c bein a fan i will be getting the real copy on the release day and i would not bother with a pirate copy when J.K Rowling has put so much effort and time into this book! Besides with the release day being so soon i would think people could wait a few more days...Who ever posted this file on the internet should be caught and punished..severly!
Sam, Sydney, NSW
Actually this article does only say that something slipped through, but it doesn't mean, that the long photo version is the true Harry Potter book.
I can't believe that somebody had the chance to take pictures of the whole book. After all the books are under high security. Maybe it is possible to take one or two picture (of the table of contents for example) but not about 500!
I just hope it's all fanfiction!
