Conservationists map out plan to protect Britain’s wild flower habitats

SALISBURY Conservationists have drawn up a list of areas in Britain with important collections of wild flowers and plants.

The move is intended to boost conservation and appreciation of the plant habitats. Among the 150 areas are the New Forest, the Lizard, the Gower peninsula, Snowdon and the Cairngorms. Less well-known locations identified by botanists include the Torbay Limestones in Devon, the Ouse Washes in East Anglia and the Cambrian Mountains woodland in Wales.

Victoria Chester, chief executive of Plantlife, the wild plant conservation charity, said: “Publishing this list demonstrates the botanical richness which has managed to survive across the UK despite threats from urban development, industry and intensive or inappropriate agriculture.”

The charity, which is based in Salisbury, would like each area to be adopted by local enthusiasts to help to protect the habitats in the longer term. It is hoped that some areas will receive funding for conservation work. Each area was chosen because it has a significant population of a threatened species, has an exceptionally rich variety of plants or is an outstanding example of a habitat of international importance.
