The evening started modestly enough with a bottle of Pinot Grigio, although at £25 it was on the high side of pricey. Still, it was being bought in a smart West End nightclub.
But it was as nothing compared to the final bill run up by a Middle Eastern businessman and around a dozen friends during five hours of drinking at the Crystal Club in Marylebone on Saturday night. By 5am on Sunday morning the host’s credit card was lighter by £105,805 and 28 pence.
For the anonymous customer and his party, the Pinot was a mere light aperitif. He then announced to club staff that he wanted the drinks to flow all night.
They went on to consume 36 bottles of Cristal champagne at £12,960; three magnums of Dom Perignon 1995 at £2,700; 15 bottles of Dom Perignon 1999 at £3,600: six more magnums of Dom Perignon at £4,200; a dozen bottles of Dom Perignon Rosé at £4,200; four bottles of Cristal Rosé at £2,400 and two jeroboams of Cristal at £9,600.
The party ended the session in style, with a methuselah – the equivalent of eight bottles – of Cristal at £30,000, and another methuselah of Belvedere Polish vodka at £1,400.
The businessman, thought to be based in Dubai, bought a carry-out, a jeroboam of Dom Perignon at £9,000, which he gave to his chauffeur to look after. And then came the bill. He had spent £81,471.50 on drinks, to which was added £13,951.03 in VAT, and a whacking £10,382.74 service charge.
Fraser Donaldson, spokesman for the club, said it was the biggest bill he had seen for a single customer. “However, I would say it’s typical of the spending that’s going on in London right now. I expect even this will be beaten soon.”

But how did they drink so much!?
Chris, New York, NY
Mark Thomas - who cares whether you're impressed or not? It's his money, and how he chooses to spend it has no impact on you. The term "excess" is entirely relative. That three-course meal you eat with your bottle of red on a Sunday lunchtime would be considered excess in the third-world African country I'm emigrating to in a few weeks. Funny though, I don't hear them all whinging about your excessive lifestyle here in the opulent West - they're too busy working their butts off and trying to get an education so they can better themselves.
Whinge, whinge, whinge.
I say "cheers" to whomever this businessman was, and thanks for your business! Please call again soon.

Hence the price of oil?
Richard, London,
Pete, where did it say he was Muslim?
Bemused, York,
"Based in Dubai" and "Middle Eastern businessman" does not mean he is a) native to the area or b) Muslim. There's a huge international contingent out there.
Rebecca, London,
Someone needs to do some maths...or the businessman needs to check his bill.. So each person of the 'around a dozen' drank just under 10 bottles each in 5 hours... That's impressive.. and I'm from Newcastle.
Bob Greeves, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK
Excellent. Always delighted to hear of fools and their money being parted. And Fraser Donaldson will no doubt be right. There's always a bigger fool waiting in the wings to entertain us.
eric campbell, harrogate, uk
They are pretty hardened drinkers for a country where alcohol is so tightly controlled, that's 103 bottles of wine and a bottle of vodka between 13 people.
Or perhaps there were a few friendly female hangers on in short skirts?
Dan, London,
Well it's nice (for which read: sickening) to know that some people have got such an excess of money over sense that they can have a good time, while the rest of us put up with being mugged through taxation every which way we turn.
I am NOT impressed.
Mark Thomas, Biddulph, Staffordshire,
'Middle Eastern' doesn't necessaril mean Muslim. There are lots of Assyrian Christians, Armenian Orthodox Christians and many different Jewish communities. E.g. in Turkey there is a large community of Jews who have been there since they fled Spain to the Ottoman Empire when the Catholic Church took over under Isabella and Philip. Their number was augmented when Turkey accepted the boatloads of Jewish refugees from Europe in the second world war (the same ones who were typically turned away by Western countries......) And so on
Ruth, London,
Pete, the article says "Middle Eastern", that doesn't automatically mean Muslim.
Dave, Kent, UK
The customer was anonymous you should not assume everyone from the middle east is a Muslim.
Joseph Kellie, Edinburgh, Scotland
Gosh Pete, have you ever thought that maybe not everyone from the Middle East is a Muslim? But then you might have to imagine, if you can, that not everyone in England is a Christian. Go on, try.
Bigot, Little Nowhere, USA
I presume 12 or so people were not able to drink all of this. I count a total of 101 bottles of champagne plus a bottle of vodka.... Its impossible for 12 people to drink anything similar to this in 5 hours. I can't believe the guy signed the credit card slip!
Anon, Anon, USA
I thought Muslims arent allowed to drink.
Pete, Cov,
cheers
