'Terrorist' defamation cases trebled

Terrorist suspects are fuelling a surge in defamation actions against newspapers and broadcasting organisations, according to a survey published today. The number of defamation cases brought by alleged terror suspects has almost trebled in a year, making up almost 13 per cent of reported claims in the year to the end of May.

The figures are revealed by Sweet & Maxwell’s legal online information service. One factor, it says, is the increased reporting of large numbers of suspects allegedly involved in plots. David Price, of David Price Solicitors & Advocates, who has acted in terrorism claims, said: “Inevitably with a large amount of material in the media, mistakes will be made and these will lead to claims.”
