‘Airlock’ security at Pirbright

Questions about biosecurity measures at Pirbright laboratory were being raised last night because of fears that the facility was the source of the foot-and-mouth outbreak and that the disease was released by human activity.

Lab workers at Pirbright must en- ter through a “clean side” changing area, and exit from the “dirty side”, which is separated by a ventilated air lock, in which they are meant to strip, shower and change clothes. Staff wear close-fitting gowns that are sterilised after every shift. All accessories, such as rings and watches, must be removed. Food, drink or tobacco should never be passed through the air lock. Incoming packages containing pathogens have to be sealed in cans, and only safety officers or their deputies can authorise workers to enter the laboratory.
