DAWN FRENCH, the comedy actress, is heading off to Cornwall next month and her own personal sunset. She is convinced that she will die soon in a £2.3m house that she and her husband Lenny Henry have bought and lovingly restored.
She is completing her memoirs for which she is being paid £2m. She is writing the book in the form of letters to her close relatives, including her late father who committed suicide at the age of 45.
French, who will be 50 in October, is not suffering from any illness but says she has been certain since she was six that she would have an early death.
The actress, who played the ever-cheerful Vicar of Dibley in the TV series, reveals her fatalistic nature in an interview in The Sunday Times Magazine today.
She says she felt strongly that she wanted to be in Cornwall by the time she was 50 and believes she will die there. “I’ve never thought I’d live to be very old,” she says. “I’ve always felt that. So by 50 I want to be down there.”
She adds: “I’m not ill. I’m very fit, in fact . . . I don’t feel gloomy about it. I’m resigned to it. I don’t know why I feel so sure. I said it to my brother when I was about six.”
She and Henry, her fellow comedian whom she married in 1984, have bought a 40-room stone mansion overlooking a smugglers’ cove in the heart of Daphne du Maurier country. The grade II-listed property was built in the early 19th century by the same family who built the house on which Manderley, the setting for Rebecca, one of du Maurier’s best known novels, is based.
French, who lives in Berkshire at present, has strong links with the southwest. She was born in Saltash and was educated in Plymouth. Her mother, who used to run a poodle parlour, and her brother Gary still live in Cornwall. French was 19 when her father Denys took his own life. The former RAF man had suffered from depression after leaving the services. He gassed himself in his car.
The comedienne says that she wants to stay alive long enough to help to equip her adopted daughter, Billie, now 15, for adult life. Otherwise she is not frightened of death.
“It doesn’t feel scary, it feels like a surety,” she says. “I’m not scared of death. I want to be around for my kid to get plugged into adult life. That is the only thing I would want to live any time for.”
She adds: “I’ve told Len ever since I’ve known him, I don’t think I’ll be around for a long time. What’s weird is I’m quite a logical person and there’s not much logic to this. There are certain things I just know.”
French, who is 50 in October, says she hopes “to die slowly and nicely, in great surroundings with my family”.
She has written letters to both Henry and their daughter for her book. Another is likely to be addressed to Jennifer Saunders, her comedy partner for 27 years.
The two will be reunited for a new series, A Bucket o’ French & Saunders, which will begin on BBC1 on September 7 and is likely to be their swansong on television before they go on a farewell tour next spring.

Dear Dawn, I was looking for your web site so I could tell you how much I have enjoyed reading your book Dear Fatty. I was really saddened to read the Times article saying that you believe that you will die soon. I hope that you don't. You are very much loved and needed to keep us all smiling
Penny Watson, Hoylake, UK
Dawn~! I met you back in 1984, you came back to St Dunstans to get your sprig of myrtle to put in your wedding flowers ( I was a student there)... I was a big girl like you too, I got gastric bypass surgery and have lost nearly 10stone, I am not slim, fit and hot and you could be too.
Samantha, canada,
If by chance Dawn will read this, it's quite commen for a child who lost thier father in this manner to feel that they too, will have an early demise. But Dawn, you are not going to die at fifty..You see you just can't. I would miss you too much'
margaret anderson, Fort Erie, Canada
I live in the same village that Dawn is moving to and can assure her that she won't have time to die. They are a kind and generous bunch and she will want to stay alive to enjoy it all. I wish Dawn and her family a long and happy life in this beautiful place
Caroline Thomlinson, Fowey, Cornwall
hello everyone, i went to parliament hill school dawn was my school teacher, she was my drama teacher . that was my best lesson off the week.

I am an 11 year old girl called Sophie.I just wanted to say,Dawn is my Idol.I have done my school Project on her and I thought,no offence, that no one would have heard of her but everyone knew her and adored her!She is a hilarious, caring woman and when she dies a part of me will die too...
Sophie, Broadstairs, England
Dawn French is so refreshingly unpretentious and delightful. I have never met her but she seems such an unlikely paring for her sour faced counterpart Jennifer Saunders - but they do say opposites attract! Indeed opposites they appear.
Won't Dawn feel silly if she is still around in 30 yrs time!?
Clare, Exetetr, England
Dawn , I actually started going to church more often after watching your shows. In fact I even bought every episode of the Vicar of Dibley. Its my favorite show ! Keep up the good work. Hopefully someday day I can travel to England looks like a lovely country.
tonya, austin, usa
Dawn, what a beautiful person you are ! Enjoyed the Vicar of Dibley and wish it would have gone on forever. I live in Dibley when I watch the shows and love it there. That is one of the few places I can forget my sorrow. Thank you for sharing your pleasantness. Irene

Dawn,
I've just found you on USA PBS station. I LOVE you and sit and laugh out loud, all by myself, you are SO funny. You have taken a special place in my heart. And looking up "all about you", I have a daughter born also on October 11, 1957. Somehow let us know of future programs that you will do.

Hi
On a different note,
The two little orphan boys you showed on your Chrstmas edition 2005 re: Makepovertyhistory, do you know what ever became of them,
I just seen it for the first time last night (bought it last Xams) and I can't stop thinking fo them, I haven't cried like that in a while, I have been relentless today in joining the fight against poverty campaign.
Thankfully yours

The world will be a much duller place with you in it. You are such a lovely and attractive person and very clever and entertaining. Hope your move to Cornwall will be wonderful for you. It is such a lovely place. Lots of best wishes to you and your family

Hi! Dawn, Hey, I've heard of lots of excuses for an addiction to chocolate, but this just beats everything, it's no good, I'm just not buying it. (Well, yes I do, buy chocolate that is, not as often as you maybe, how often IS that by the way? once, twice, every hour?) Will Lenny be having roses carved around your epitaph; 'She wouldn't change to Cadbury's Dairy Milk' (that's my brand, and I'm still a size 10 at 55 and threequarters (WHY can't computers accomodate quarters in numbers?), or will he save money and simply glue-on lots of galaxy wrappers? Love Chris(Looe) P.S. have you considered the job losses here? Mars, Nestle: NOT FORGETTING TERRY'S!!!!!!!!! As I suspected, you haven't thought this through at all, have you?
Chris Belcher (MRS.), EAST LOOE, CORNWALL
Dear Dawn
I urge you to please change your mind set.
I wonder if you have considered the power of the spoken word and the effect it can have on our own and others lives.Words are far more powerful than we realise. I urge you to refrain from confessing your predictions about dying young and encourage you to do the oposite and speak out that you will have a full and long life, if not for yourself, then for your daughter and husband and possible future grandkiddies who will need you in their lives. You are a precious women with much to give I am sure. Life is a gift! Live long and be at peace.
Luanne, Salisbury,
Dear Dawn,
I do not know the particulars of that unfortunate event during which you told your brother of the notion you had about your premature death, but I would like to offer you an idea, and maybe the conclusion, will change your mind. I believe you have carried with you this dreadful thought, and it is dreadful, inspite of the fact you may think it humbling, for so long that you've believed it to be truth. You were a child, and as brilliant as you may have been, I doubt you really had a grasp on the full spectrum and understanding of death. Even so, you have the power to forge your own destiny, if you want to! Perhaps the idea that so many in this world adore you is indeed a heavy burden, so how about just focus on your life and your happiness. Stop to listen to your inner-self, you can do it. You can begin a new path and a new mind set. It's up to the individual, but as one of the adoring fans , give it a shot.

I, like Dawn have felt from quite an early age that I would die young. I will be 50 in April.
Unfortunately, unlike Dawn I was actually diagnosed with a very rare terminal disease which only affects women and only 1 woman in 1 million just over 2 years ago. This disease is called Lymphangioleiomyomatosis. Because it is so rare and virtually unknown funds for research are desperately needed. In the last 10 years LAM Action have only managed to raise just over £300,000. Money for research into this dreadful disease is desperately needed. I, and about 60 other women in UK have a death sentence hanging over us with no hope of treatment or cure.
I am Cornish, I have lived here all my life, it is a great place, b ut I don't wish to die just yet. I have two children whom I would like to see get married and have children of their own. Please help to raise awareness of LAM and raise money for vital research.

Dearest Dawn, the Goddess of Comedy,
You have millions of fans behind you and to say that death for you is around the corner is silly. Don't wish your life away. You're like my relative you feel so close to my heart with all your humour. Please, don't lose yourself!
John, Cardiff, Wales
Hi Dawn,
I think you are a very funny lady and we have the same sence of humor. You always make me laugh.
I know just were your coming from when you say you know you won't reach old age. I sometime feel the same way myself. You just some how know, but I do hope you do have many more happy years with your lovely family and enjoy life too the full. I always say that if you think and feel young, you can still live a long life and well into your 80's.
Good luck too you and your family and stay happy!
Love

Hi Dawn,
not meaning to sound morbid, but I've been very down lately and one of the surest ways I've found to cheer myself up has been watching The Vicar of Dibley. Thanks for the therapy - I think you're fantastic!!!!!
All the best,

Thanks for enriching our lives with your gift of laughter!

Hi Dawn,
I'm a Christian and have been watching Dibley for some time now. It's absolutely hilarious!!! I laugh my head off when it's on. You play Geraldine very well.
Anyway, don't go and die until you've met Jesus first. I'm sure He found Dibley funny too. So, take time out in sunny Cornwall, go for a walk and meet up with Him for a chat. He's a number one bloke! Meet up with Him . You won't regret it.
Bless you heaps Dawn!

The Vicar of Dibley is being run for the third or foruth time on Public Brocasting Stations her in Houston TX and I am enjoying it the same as I did the very first time. Nedless to say my heart dropped to my feet when I hears Dawn French was going home to die. This is the first time I have looked her up on internet and was quite shaken before reading on. Then I read sh is going on tour after her demise so I inow things are just fine. Love you from America.

"It was fantastic to work in Cornwall partly because my family live there so I was able to do lots of visiting and eat lots of cake. They live all over Cornwall and all over Devon. "

I fond this quote which proves that she did NOT move to Cornwall to die. I can sleep now!

From the Deep South, (known as the Bible belt) USA, here and I have loved the Vicar of Dibley. The "Brit Coms" have shown here on Sat nights for quite awhile, my favorite night for TV!! We recently lost the V of D, sad to say. You are absolutely a bright light and a joy to have in my home!
Hope your death feelings are false, many people have them and live right through D-day. So my prayer for you is that you have a long, happy life here on this earth and a longer, happier one when you pass away - I plan to!

Please can you possibly help my search for helping to fund a very gifted Nigerian student of 24 who has just completed his Bsc Hons at local Uni in 2 years. Subject, Clinical Psychology. He is trying to scrape funds for his Msc and works all hours to fund this and possibly a Phd. He had a scholarship from Nigeria Govern. for Bsc. Parents have 6 children and have just been in a car crash. He does not want to worry them.
Oklo is utterly focussed on becoming a consultant. He is honest, hard-working, and always cheerful. He speaks perfect English. My friends and I admire him greatly.
The new term starts soon for his Msc. and I hope that we can help him to proceed. Please can Comic Relief help him? Your help and advice would be much appreciated. Sue.

Dear Ms. French,
I have enjoyed all of your work which has been available to us in the states on TV. Your writing is wonderful. The Vicar of Dibley made me laugh out loud. I LOVED that a BBW like the Vicar married a hunky guy - - in her pink flowered silk pajamas!
One word of encouragement. My older brother was sure from birth that he would die when he was 21. He was absolutely certain, and he is a rational man. I am happy to say that he will celebrate his 60th birthday this coming December. SO, whatever you feel is fated, just go with the flow and enjoy your life. Best wishes on the new show.

Dawn,
I assure you that Americans adore your humor as much as the Brits. You have provided us with smiles and solace and I can only pray that you'll keep inspiring us with your performances.
I find that when I'm stressed, I watch a Vicar of Dibley episode and poof, my nerves are calmed and I can once again face the world. Ohhhh, take your vitamins, stay away from nucleur power plants and live a long and healthy life!!
Love you!

Dear Dawn, British girl, Aussie hubby, four kids, living in Denver USA. Just watched the 6 volumes of vicar of Dibley, after leaving UK in 1992 so missed it all. We haven't laughed so much in 15 years! You have a gift, and a talent that is extremely rare, and it must stay on the planet with you. You are so unique, and I thank you for the laughter you bring, remember you have a lot to live for. Not sure the Yanks would actually go for some of these jokes, or at least admit it in public anyway. Maybe you should come over here and show them how it's done. Thank you!
Rosemary, Denver, USA
Is it worth buying tickets for the tour, I wonder?
Willie Nelson, Sheffield,
Why not having time for herself. She did till now a great work, the only thing which is needed is = PLEASE get it that we over here in Germany have got the possibility to get Vicar of Dibley on TV or to purchase all DVDs. That would be lovely ^^ Dawn, I love you and your work! Best wishes
Michaela, Hamburg, Germany
Dear Dawn, I hope you are wrong about your death. You have given me so many hours of enjoyment. I get really down and depressed because of personal things, but when I watch you I laugh and for a short time forget myself. This a a special gift you have and I hope you will continue to share it with us. When you were young you may have picked up on conversations around you or maybe something on tv or radio that put these thoughts in your mind. My granddaughter was living close to my brother when he died. Now she thinks every old person she sees is going to drop dead. It almost has become a problem. I'm glad you are happy in Cornwall. I read a book by Howard Spring years ago, called House of Glass and ever since then I wanted to see Cornwall, of course it will never happen, but I'm happy for you. I also love your husband and
watch Chef when it was on American tv. There is nothing in this world like British humor and you are one of the best. All I can say is "thanks"
Kate Hansen, Baltimore, Maryland
Dawn French is my role model and in many ways I know how she feels when she sais she doesnt think she will live to be tht old
and all I can say is Dawn French makes the world go round ...... she doesnt deserve to have her feelings and decisions contradicted because her fans would like her to stay where she is
we should respect dawn as the person she is and give her the support that she so obviously needs.
Afterall she is one of the funniest women on the whole god damn planet. And after giving 20 years of her beautiful life to making us laugh i think she needs a break
dont you?
i certainly should hope that you think she does too
lots of love
Hannah Thomas, St.Albans, England
Dawn, We love you here in America and I want to say that although you have these feelings, God has a marvelous sense of humor and it would not surprise me to see you in a Vicar of Dibley reunion show 20 years from now.
Chin up and stop frightening your daughter, you are better than that.
Twyla, Las Vegas, USA
dear Dwn I find yr prog. the Vic etc. very good 4 me as I suffer from depression. I have often wondered if u have faith or a belief although u play a minister of the cloth vry. well.?Wld love to hear.

Hi, my name is Angela. I understand the feeling Dawn has as my close best friend had it and she did die before she was 50. What I am disappointed in is that Dawn felt the need to make her personal conviction so public. People genuinely were distressed to hear that she was going to die and then to feel foolish that she is actually fit and well. It puts the news into the"desperately trying to get publicity" category and she really doesn't need to do that. It also tends to be frivolous in the face of people who are seriously ill and dying, whose lives are torn apart and are suffering dreadfully. "Oh, I think I am going to die sometime soon", when announced like Dawn did, is quite repulsive. She has let herself and her family down - now will she have to go through with it just to prove herself right?????
I hope not.
Angela Lambert, Dublin, Ireland
Hi my name is Janet, I think that Dawn French is absolutely great. I to am 50 this year and share my birthday with Dawn on the 11th October. She is always so full of life and it would be great to meet her.

Dawn, in my fifties I still have both my parents and I cannot bear the idea of losing them. Please don't think that Billie has to go through what you went through - break the cycle, for her sake and ours.
Diane, Sutton,
Who would have thought that our much loved Dawn would have thoughts like this.
I am a Cornish person too and grew up in Plymouth - I too have these thoughts and have gotten to be 55...
We love to watch you here in the US and the Yanks love the Vicar.
It's so lovely that you share your life with Lenny Henry - two living legends
Enjoy life Dawn
David Saunders, Charlotte, USA North Carolina
Bit too morbid for me, but on the other hand I admire her courage for facing up to death. She must be really secure in herself to contemplate dying so dispassionately.
I really don't want to say this, but someone must observe that if she lost a few stones she might live a bit longer.
Joan Taylor, Glasgow, Scotland
