Climate change campaigners set up a camp near Heathrow yesterday, two days earlier than planned. More than 1,500 people from Britain and Europe are expected to visit the camp, between the villages of Sipson and Harlington, which is due to open on Tuesday.
Organisers have linked up with residents resisting the building of a third runway at Heathrow. There will be workshops on issues ranging from campaigning skills to practical training on how to take direct action, and a day of action on Sunday.
A spokeswoman said: “There has been a lot of talk about disruption but our aim is not to affect passengers or ruin holidays - we simply want to challenge the aviation industry.” Organisers believe that publicity about a controversial legal move by the British Airports Authority, aimed at banning protests, is expected to attract more people to the camp than expected.
Up to 1,800 police from four forces will be on duty amid fears in Scotland Yard that the event will attract people intent on causing trouble. The location of the campsite will not be announced until Tuesday morning.

Seeing as how more CO2 is produced by cows than by aircraft are they going to start camping outside every dairy farm next?
What about the CO2 produced by volcanic eruptions? I hear Mt Vesuvius is nice this time of year. Might have problems getting a flight there out of Heathrow though.

BAA shot themselves in the foot almost immediately. As soon as someone starts shouting about terrorism you know they're trying to divert attention from the real issues.

Seems a silly place to campaign for reduction in air travel. With 60 million fights from/to the UK, flying is something most of us do. They should be campaigning for not visiting families overseas, not going on business trips and having all your holidays at home (I really mean at home!). BAA just provide the means, we do the flying.
Nick, Ayr,
No matter what your views on this subject this action will not stop the tide of evolution.
Canute tried something siimilar when he tried to stop the tide.
He just got wet feet.
Many people in this instance could get injured including the over stretched police.
On thing to be sure is that the extra police over time will work wonders for increasing the Council Tax burden.
Bernard Parke, GUILDFORD,
You know what I find odd....there are "climate-change" protestors at the Heathrow camp who are from abroad - or at least Europe....one has to wonder how they got here....did they use some new magical non-polluting means of travel? Seems a bit hypocritical when people travel to protest against erm....travel....
