A public school was at the centre of a fierce row last night after pupils appeared in a spoof video beating and shooting tracksuit-clad teenagers and engaging in a pursuit they called “chav hunting”.
Glenalmond College in Perthshire, whose old boys include Robbie Coltrane and the Duke of Argyll, was accused of arrogance after students were shown posing as young aristocrats chasing their social inferiors across the countryside before shooting them using a replica shotgun.
Roseanna Cunningham, the Scottish Nationalist Party MSP for the area, said last night: “I suppose this video could be billed as the revenge of Monty Python’s upper-class twits. Doubtless it is intended as humour and irony but it comes across as brash, crass and arrogant.”
She added: “Is that really what their parents are paying for when they send their privileged offspring to an exclusive school like Glenalmond?”
In the video, entitled Class Wars, young gentlemen in perfect riding attire are seen on horseback swigging champagne before setting out on their hunt. They come across a group of chavs, dressed in the telltale Burberry caps, tracksuits and designer trainers of Britain’s white underclass, chasing them along a country lane before rounding on one of them. As the chav lies on the ground, one of the riders dismounts and prods him with a cane while a hound sniffs at him.
As the video reaches its conclusion, the chavs are seen running for their lives across a lawn while a double-barrelled shotgun picks them off one by one and they tumble to the ground in slow motion. To rousing classical music, a pair of young aristocrats prod a chav with their guns, looking pleasantly satisfied as they assure themselves that he is dead. All those involved in the video, both chavs and aristocrats, are believed to be current or former pupils at the school.
The three-and-a-half-minute video, posted on the YouTube website under the category “Chav Hunting”, identifies the film’s location as Glenalmond.
The school, which costs up to £22,500 in yearly fees for boarders and is set in 300 acres of rolling countryside outside Perth, boasts that it aims to instil in its pupils “timeless qualities that have their roots firmly in the British tradition: courtesy, honesty, integrity, modesty and a respect for others”.
Glenalmond College refused to comment last night.

good show chaps, well done there. hope to see a second one some time soon. well done
freddie, cambs,
I can't recall Roseanna Cunningham having issues with the showing of Saw 3 in a cinema in her constituency.
John, Edinburgh, Scotland
Absolutely priceless. I have lost count of how many of my mates featured in this astonishingly well put together piece of material. Very well done chaps. Roseanna doesn't know what she is missing out!
Hector, Edinburgh,
The characterisation of both the upper class twits and the chavs is hilarious caricature and the film was made to raise money for charity. A serious loss of sense of humour here, especially from the Warden who saw the film at a charity event 2 years ago - come on guys, lighten up!
Chav girl, Edinburgh, Scotland
This video makes for refreshing and worthy viewing, it not only depicts a well constructed class structure but highlights the need for some much needed social cleansing! I strongly appeal to David Lister and Roseanna Cunningham to attempt to see the humourous side to this video instead of taking the well trodden and dull moral high ground.
Rachel Parrott, Perthshire,
Those guys are heroes.
It is about time that decent people stopped putting up with theiving, anti-social, over breeding, work shy scum bags.
The government should take note, not critisise, before there is eventually civil war.
Philip, Reading,
It wasn't quite the same...the chavs were a lot slower than foxes but at least the party didn't complain.
We think this is brilliant idea. The video shows the future of traditional British sports, and we should start treating it like one. This is the answer to 90% of our problems!!
Timothy Rodderick-Gibs and Cecelia Wexstaff-Heaton, Richmond, London,
I find it unbelievable that people are up in arms and offended by this clip. A reality check is in order.
Paul, Wellington, Somerset
Tally Ho I say.
James, Reading,
Surely there's much more offensive videos than this?
Nobody seems impressed by their video-editing abilities...I am.
Calum, Guildford,
ROFLMFAO !! I think that is hilarious ... why do we bother listening to what MP's think . It's never actually what they think ... more what they think people want them to think , so as they don't upset anybody .
Benzo, Nr Chelmsford,
Frank Upton: Roseanna Cunningham IS all that, allegedly. Always has been even in her 79 Group days. Thank Heavens Salmond came back, Cunningham was in the lead for the SNP Leadership.
Chris D, Edinburgh, Scotland
Of tonight's two major news items concerning the activities of young people, which would you prefer to hear: that from Warrington or that from Glenalmond College in Perthshire?
Mikey, Teesside,
Firstly you have to understand that, if your paying for your child to be sent to a school boarding you place them into a schooling society that perceives itself better than other schools , people and students because they have to pay for their education.
To answer the query: "Is that really what their parents are paying for when they send their privileged offspring to an exclusive school like Glenalmond" the answer is no not really. But think about it they are teenagers, locked in a bordering school that must seem like a prison because they have to live by the school rules restricted from having excessive amounts of fun. So their answer is to make their own.
Itâs not PC but so what not everyone can be and itâs just a bit of fun. Just look at the video the 'chavs' go to the school. Give them a break this is all a fuss over nothing.
Peter, Oxford, UK
Fantastic video, they should be given money to make more! The MSP should focus on more important things, probably just jealous that people with money are able to afford to go to such a school
Robert, London,
It seems to be a common misconception that Chavness is directly related to social / economic status. I know loads of Working Class people (myself included) who aren't Chavs, and I'm sure there are plenty of Middle or Upper Class people who subscribe to the Chav mentality; the only difference is their ability to fund their abhorrent lifestyles.
As for the video, it's refreshing to see some "Chavs" get a taste of their own medicine as, in my experience, it is usually they who take the role of the Hunter, victimising anyone they perceive as being different or weaker than themselves.
Jason, Norwich, England
The film was made for a spoof for a house play. The play included sketches and acts the slated teachers and celebs alike. It is a simple bit of harmles fun. It only gives tabloids a reason to slate a public school which is typical.
Personally i find the video very funny and rather well made. it shows talent at the school and a sense of humor.
Dickie Dry, Fife,
That's a viral video - it's been circulating for quite a while longer than you'd think.
And it's quite magnificently funny.
It's also a much healthier and more intelligent outlet for the cold loathing all right-mided folk of whatever social background share for these tracksuit-clad rats than the historically popular "purge." :D
Greg, Northampton, England
Its the answer to fox hunting! Sheer genius! Its not refined to those owning a horse either, all you require is a sun roof and some form of firing weapon.
Cuthbert Squire, Mayfair, London
Looks like the class system is as strong as it ever was.Shame on these snobs.
j shepherd, frome, somerset
This is gold
Mark, Edinburgh,
Fantastic! A bill should be pushed through Parliament with a matter or urgency to legalise such brilliant acts. Perhaps this video is a portent of a beautiful future for this country, where those with stupid faces and prison white trainers are culled to reduce strain on the national budget.
Steven, London,
I dunt fink dis video is nice to watch. der socaled chavs dont do nuffink to deserve this.
av u ever thought that it is the chavs dat are right and der poshos need culling. i av.
Chardonnay Jones, Luton, Beds
"Watch Chav Hunting on YouTube?" Why? Life is far too short to waste on mindlessness and mean spirited humour. Thanks, but...no. However, this video does prove, however, that chav-ness really doesn't have anything to do with money or where one was born--tacky is tacky, no matter what your social status.
Nancy, Glens Falls, USA NY
I wonder what mark they got for their GCSE Media Studies with this then? ;)
James, Tunbridge Wells, Kent
Having been educated at the school, i think that the video is fantastic and that chav hunting should become a sport and help clean up our grim street life and society we are slipping into because of the labour goverment!!
Rupert , Perthshire,
I agree with Andy, the video is very funny. The whole thing's tongue in cheek and is genuinely amusing, rather than "brash, crass and arrogant". The article implies the video brutally dipicts the English Upper Class demonising the working class but it seems more to be a short satirical joke. Making fun of chavs is nothing new when you consider shows such as Catherine Tate and Little Britain, which pale in comparison to this master piece.
Oli Baggaley, Chislehurst, UK
Chav hunting? Sign me up!
Pete, Cov,
It's a bit of FUN. If you find it wrong or offensive then I suggest you may desperately need of sense-of-homour transplant.
Lance, Crawley, UK
Who has a right to stop them making this!
Josh, Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire
It sounds like a bit of tpublic school eenage sport, drawing attention to the lazy slackers in our dountry who hang around street corners, drinking Buckfast and terrorising old ladies.
Glenalmond continues to produce fine upstanding toung men and women, who will doubtless earn sufficient monety to contribute to HM treasury to allow these shell suited wasters to continue to tarnish our society. Let them have their mock protest. Roseanna Cunningham should raise it as a motion in our ridiculous Scottish Parliamant as the new national sport.
Keith Lawrence, glasgow, scotland
The video is hilarious...Roseanna Cunningham get a life.
HarryM, London, uk
These people who are protesting at heathrow airport
They need there heads looking at what are they are
Going to do about it not a lot are they at all about it
As i think they are wasting there time and energy to do some thing like this what is it going to get any one
Noticed about it as people like they did at east midlands airport a few months ago they got done for it and what did they get for it a slab whist and do not do it again what a load of rubbish they do not know what they are on about do they
graham.bonshor, loughborough, leicestershire
This video is clearly intended as an ironic comment on V-blogging, the effect of video technology and 'cyber-bullying'. Personally I would like to see the video showcased in the tate modern as part of an exitbition show casing talented young artists work rather than being demonised by an overly sensitive MP.
Though this video seems some what tame compared to the public school equivalent of happy slapping where people are actually injured.
James McPherson, London, England
Both sides of the opinion divide might argue that it's a great shame the shotguns weren't real.
Awganic, Bournemouth, UK
Shame they weren't in Warrington over the weekend, they could have saved a life.
Liz, Bristol,
The trouble is that if we don't cull the chavs they overbreed and there are not enough territories for them (Liquorice Allsports shops and Pound World) or feeding grounds (Chicken Cottages) so they end up bottling and stabbing each other. The baby ones are really cute so it's a shame.
chavmum, kingston,
I must look out for the advertisement "Wanted, school police. The usual minority group and political policy applies. Ideally the successful candidate will have degrees in 'Beckham' and a 'Ology'.

Nigel Graham-Miller, Valencia, Spain
It's a bit of FUN. If you find it wrong or offensive then I suggest you may desperately need of sense-of-humour transplant.
Lance, Crawley, UK
It looks like great fun. It ought to be legalised. Why not send them to Warrington to clean up the streets a bit.
William, Norwich, England, UK.
Maybe the SNP should address "The Butchers Apron" in their own backyard.
Digory, Narnia, Scotland
Roseanna Cunningham comes across as a typically fatuous, vapid, brash, crass, arrogant, attention-seeking, insincere, rent-a-quote politician.
Frank Upton, Solihull,
Following the Big Brother "Race" Debacle the Sun Newspaper published a series of pictures on its front page.
These pictures depicted a series of children and their nicknames.
Blonde, White children were depicted as "White Trash".
Digory, Narnia, Scotland
ha ha ha, thre's no need to demonise thse young ruffians. they're just having good clean, wholesome fun hunting pikeys. Who are we to demonise them? god's speed!
