WATCHET Torrent the otter has a problem for a water creature: he can’t – or won’t – swim. The orphaned four-month-old cub was rescued near Watchet in Somerset in last month’s storms. But at the Secret World Wildlife Rescue centre in Highbridge, Pauline Kidner, the manager, said: “He won’t go swimming; It’s very unusual.” She believes Torrent has a problem with his fur, because air bubbles form in it when it gets wet. It should be slick. “I don’t think he likes how that makes him feel.”

Poor little guy, certainly there must be an expert out here in cyber space that can help him. If not there ought to be.

It's quite obvious he needs a wetsuit...DO IT...DO IT...

Aww! He's cute! Is it possibly a diet issue with his fur? I don't know, I had a black lab once that was terrified of water and I knew of no trauma to cause it. He didn't mind getting a bath. Are you bathing Torrent? Don't.

Give him lots of natural oils, oils from fish and animals, and from things like olives and sunflowers. Load his diet quite heavily with them. After a week of this sort of feeding start to groom him with a hair brush three or four times a day. Brush failry hard for ten or fifteen minutes. After four weeks of starting this regime, he'll swim like a trout with not an air bubble in sight.
I did this with an equally recalcitrant African three-clawed otter and it worked a treat. My happiest memory of that young otter was watching him clear the surface of the river a couple of times as he swam away. Forever.

That's odd. The otter really ought 'ter.

Gimme, I'll get the lil' dude to swim.

Ahhh - the poor little be-whiskered bunny! It's nothing to do with his fur and clearly some water-based deep emotional rauma that Torrent is reacting to. Perhaps his ma & pa were swept out to sea one dark stormy night and he's had a fear of water ever since...Otters are much more sensitive than people think. Having said that they're all cute and furry - but could have your arm off in two shakes of a pig's whistle if they had a mind to....all hail the otter!!
Neela, London, London
I agree, what a little cutie!
If little Watchet doesnât want to get in the water, he doesnât have to. That's the perk of being adorable.
Stefanie, Palm Springs, USA, CA
