LEE-ON-THE-SOLENT Police are being sent skateboarding in an attempt to cultivate a “cooler” image to improve their relations with young people. Hampshire police are sending officers to workshops, attended by up to 30 youngsters aged from 12 to 16, to receive expert tuition.
The force wants one constable, three police community support officers and one sergeant to attend the two-hour, twice-weekly sessions, where they will start on a training board without wheels.
“It is a chance for police to talk to young people in a positive situation and to break down barriers. It lets the youngsters see a more human side to the police,” a police spokeswoman said. She added that a similar scheme in which police organised other activities for children in the area had cut crime by 28 per cent last year. “If they get called to another incident they will go and deal with it rather than staying there and having fun skateboarding.”

I'm a PCSO and I've been a skater for 30 years. With some kids I can use my skating experience to help me connect with them, with others it won't work, but I can't imagine how someone came up with the idea in this article.
It's all very well me being able to use my knowledge to engage with the kids but what I've read above just makes the Police look ridiculous.
There's a good idea, lost in poor practice in this story.
PCSO, Merseyside,
The cops are at least having a go.and as far as making spectacles of themselves who cares They obviously are getting results.I am sure that my mate who is a serving police man and skates would love to meet you critics. He is one hell of a skater and in his younger days was a sponsored pro. He now competes in old school and masters events.Don't you people be so stupid this is an investment in our future our youth.
What sort of investment have you made?HEY

Now if that isn't a bright idea I don't know what is.
Trying to snuggle up to young people by skateboarding.
Well the kids will get a good laugh watching the police
making a spectacle of themselves trying to be one of them.
What's next jumping rope or playing jax?
How about hopscotch?
Jerry Scroggin, Phoenix, Arizona/USA
How utterly humiliating for the police and patronising to young people.
Pat ODonnell, Ascot,
I wonder if this means that now, the police will stop arresting, assaulting or harassing skateboarders?

If coppers want to behave like children they should not expect the respect of children.
Children should see our policemen as mature adults who have a serious and responsible job to do. They should be seen as firm but fair and certainly need some psychological training in dealing with youngsters, but skate boarding demeans them and the police as a whole.
This I take it is, direct from the Happy Clappy drawing board of Nu Labor.
