The likes of Cheryl Cole and Victoria Beckham need look no further when debating whether to insure their Jimmy Choo shoes before jetting off on holiday.
According to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Charlotte Mears, the fiancée of the Tottehnam Hotspur footballer Jermain Defoe, has the answers to the travelling quandaries of all wannabe WAGs.
As part of the Know Before You Go campaign, the 22-year-old model has written the WAG’s guide to travel which, according to the FCO, is “vital for any self-respecting wannabe WAG planning to travel stylishly, but sensibly and without hassle this summer”. WAGs became the term for the wives and girlfriends of footballers at last year’s World Cup in Germany.
Ms Mears, who was born in Essex and was working as a shop assistant in the women’s clothes chain Oasis before she met Defoe in a nightclub in 2005, offers tips on what to do if you break a nail and how to cope if your hair extensions turn green in the swimming pool.
In her column, available on the FCO website, she writes: “It’s amazing how many things can go wrong when you are travelling. So I wanted to share my top tips for a hassle-free trip. Check if the hotel has a beautician before you go!”
Last night the Conservatives criticised the column as a frivolous waste of money. Mark Francois, the Shadow Europe Minister, said: “This sounds like a bad episode of Footballers’ Wives.”
In her column, which is split into sections such as “Know before you go” and “Insure those Choos”, Ms Mears also covers topics such as holiday vaccinations and luggage restrictions. She advises: “Other useful numbers to take with you are that of the local consul or embassy - it could be invaluable if you lose a passport, or if a bit of wild partying gets you into trouble with the local law!
“Take the number and the details of your insurance company - it will save you loads of time and hassle if your luggage full of designer gear goes missing at the airport!
“An absolute must is travel insurance - one tumble off a bar table in your Jimmy Choos without insurance could cost you £20,000 worth of shopping money on your hospital bill! And whether you’ve got five Louis Vuitton cases full of designer gear or a beaten-up bag full of Primark, you’ll want to know that if anything gets lost or stolen, you will be covered.”
Ms Mears also lists her “must-have” beauty items for the plane which include eight-hour cream, lip balm and serum. Under the safety section, she says: “Try to stay in pairs or threes at the end of the night, even if your mate’s met a hunk and yours looks like a skunk, stay together and say you’ve got a headache.”
The FCO said that the guide was tongue-in-cheek with a serious message. A spokesman said: “These pages are the most-used part of the website, getting hundreds of hits.”
