Prison officers ‘trapped’ with inmates

CUMBRIA A team of five prison officers from HMP Haverigg found themselves locked in with inmates when their colleagues walked out on strike.

Industrial action meant that no one turned in to relieve the officers at the end of their 11-hour nightshift.

They say that they feared for their personal safety, were held “against their will” and are demanding answers from the jail’s managers.

One of the incarcerated staff, who did not wish to be named, spoke about being locked in with the 568 inmates at the category C site. The source said: “It seemed as though the inmates had more rights than we did, and the management held us against our will. If there had been a riot, the prisoners could have had the run of the prison with us trapped inside as number one targets.”

It remains unclear why the officers were not allowed out after finishing work. Another insider said that a direct military style order from prison management, could be responsible for the staff being caught up in the lockdown.
