David Cameron, Conservative Party leader:
“I have long admired Jane Tomlinson’s selfless and inspiring work - raising awareness and money for the fight against cancer.
“Her death is a true tragedy and my thoughts are with her family.”
Ryan Bowd and Martyn Hollingworth, co-riders with Mrs Tomlinson in her Ride Across America event in 2006:
“Jane was, is and shall continue to be an inspiration. She exemplified qualities of the human spirit that most people can only aspire to.
“She demonstrated that being diagnosed terminally ill is not a death sentence and that existing dreams and goals should not be abandoned or in her case new ones not forged.
“This, Jane hoped, people would understand did not necessarily mean going out and doing an Ironman Triathlon or rider but could be anything; learning to play a musical instrument, speak a new language, cook, sew, spending more time on the garden, seeing the world, volunteering for good causes or anything that will excite you, allow you to enjoy your time, hopefully create memories for those you love and if possible help others as well.
A spokesman for children’s medical research charity Sparks:
“Obviously everyone here at Sparks is devastated. She was not just a fantastic woman, she was an inspiration and a national and international icon.
“She will be deeply missed and of course we are extremely grateful for her work. The word inspirational is too easily used but not in this case, she was a remarkable woman.”
Mark Harris, leader of Leeds City Council:
“Very occasionally we are touched by an exceptional person. Somebody who in any other circumstances would be totally overwhelmed by the challenges they face. Jane Tomlinson was that sort of person.
“Words like ’inspiration’ and ’brave’ don’t actually do justice to her life.
“Leeds is a better place for her and her family having come here and I cannot imagine that the city will ever forget about her.”
