Four firemen have been disciplined for shining their torches into bushes where a group of homosexuals were having sex.
The fire crew were returning from a call-out when they stopped at a beauty spot that is notorious for “dogging”. They interrupted four men having an orgy. But one of the men later complained to the Aids charity, the Terrence Higgins Trust, asking what the firefighters had been doing.
The complaint led to a three-month investigation by the Avon Fire Brigade during which the four firefighters were suspended on full pay.
All were found to have brought the service into disrepute. Two were fined up to £1,000, one was demoted and the fourth was given a written warning. The four firefighters have since been transferred to other stations and have been ordered to attend a two-day equal opportunities course entitled “Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transgender Equality in the Fire Service – an absolute taboo?”
The man who made the initial complaint is now said to be happy at the outcome of the disciplinary hearings. He has been told that he will not face any police investigation, despite having committed a sex act in a public place.
The firemen were members of Blue Watch at Avonmouth station in Bristol. As part of the disciplinary action they were banned from discussing the incident even with colleagues.
Kevin Pearson, the Chief Fire Officer of the Avon Fire and Rescue Service, said yesterday that any allegations of racism or homophobia were taken very seriously.

You know some of you might like to actually look up the recently updated laws on sexual acts outdoors.
What those people were doing was in all likelihood actually NOT illegal. So long as they thought they would/could not be seen then they have not committed any illegal act.
Given the time and location it is indeed unlikely that they would have been prosecuted.
One should also note that the term "dogging" usually refers to heterosexuals who meet late at night at commit such acts.
Homosexual liaisons in such places is referred to as "cruising".
Stuart Bates, London,
As I understand these firemen where returning from fire calls they had attended in the Bristol area. There are several ways back to their station at Avonmouth, they chose the route across the downs. They were going at road speed for that area followed by a MARKED POLICE CAR directly behind them. One of the fire officers saw a movement in the bushes and ONE TORCH was shone into the area, the fire appliance did not stop although some of the crew saw what was going on, which was a ILLIGAL SEXUAL ACT in a public place, the movement in the bushes could have been someone being attacked, should they have ignored this? as there have been assaults within the Downs area before and since. It is not the four fire officers that brought the Brigade into disrepute but the SENIOR OFFICES of the Brigade who dealt with this complaint so ineptly which has made the Brigade a laughing stock not only locally but nationally and world wide as support for the four men has come from all around the world. The four men should have their sentence's quashed and the Senior Officers which started this farce should be removed from their post's.
mike, bristol,
Typical of the modern british Fire Service - Political correctness gone mad! Makes me sick!!
Randy, Fareham, Hampshire
As the Chief Fire Officer has stated , these firefighters had no operational reason for being in that location, the implication being they had taken a fire appliance to that location with the intent of catching people in the act.
I think we should expect better of our fire service personnel while on duty and they deserve to have been diciplined
Dave, London,
When I read this I had to check it wasn't April Fool's Day...I cannot believe that a Chief Fire Officer has so much spare time and money on his hands to spend months on an investigation that affects fire-fighters' careers ad livelihoods...resign!
AJM, Yorkshire,
Avon Fire & Rescue Service have brought the Service into disrepute as far as the vast majority of people in this country.
So do rapists have the right to complain of harrassment if the police shine their torches through the window of a parked car in a PUBLIC PLACE.
Dave, Glasgow,
The Chief Fire Officer should be disciplined himself for wasting money and bringing the fire service into disrepute.
Carl, London,
I suppose it brings new meaning to "Blue Watch"
Paul, Croydon, UK
If you're indulging in criminal behavior and someone shines a torch on you, remember to sue.
Brett, Manchester, UK
this is absolutely why we need a conservative government
rick, cambridge,
I am astounded. Fine upstanding citizens, hardworking firemen who risk there lives to help people, disturb people in an ILLEGAL act and it is they who get into trouble, not the individuals who are behaving in an ILLEGAL and immoral way. This country is going to the tubes.
Colin Dibble, Dukinfield, Cheshire
more political correctness gone mad.
Rob, Brighton, UK
What a waste of taxpayers money!!!!! The last time I studied law it wasnât an offence to shine a torch into a bush but it is illegal to participate in sexual activities in a public place. Surely we should be commending our firefighters for doing a very difficult and dangerous job for the benefit of our community and prosecuting those that participate in illegal activities.
Daniel Smith, Bristol, UK
