It is a sure sign that a royal romance is serious when the girlfriend is taken stalking. Not celebrity-stalking, of course, but deerstalking.
Photographs showing Kate Middleton in hunting gear, lining up a rifle for a spot of target practice before setting off for the hill at Balmoral, are seen by seasoned Palace-watchers as clear evidence that an engagement to Prince William must be in the offing.
Whereas for most couples the telltale clues include a holiday for two in Marbella, among royalty they feature the crack of a rifle and the gralloching (removal of the stomach) of a stag in the heather. If Miss Middleton has been inducted into what is regarded as the king of sports, then she really has been welcomed into the heart of the Establishment.
Sunday newspapers ran pictures yesterday showing Miss Middleton, 25, in jeans and a camouflage jacket, lying on her stomach in the approved style alongside the Prince of Wales, as she aimed at a target. No proper stalker sets off for a day’s sport without a few practice shots.
Just as inevitable as the speculation was the ritual protest from the League Against Cruel Sports, which accused Prince William of introducing his girlfriend to “a barbaric and unacceptable pastime”. Barry Hugill, of the league, said: “I don’t think the Royal Family does itself any good whatsoever by doing this. Charles and his son have an appalling record of slaughtering animals for fun.”
Yet the league appears to have come out on the wrong side of the conservationist argument. Most environmental groups, including English Nature and Scottish Natural Heritage, believe that there are far too many deer on our hills and have instituted culls. Deerstalking is supported by Scottish Natural Heritage, the National Trust for Scotland, the Forestry Commission and the Deer Commission, so training someone to kill a stag quickly and cleanly should by rights be applauded. Although it prefers the term “deer management”, Scottish Natural Heritage conceded this year that stalking was “an important part of the rural economy”.
If the gossip is true, William may be preparing for a rather different kind of stag night.

I guess you others are vegetarians, ever gone to your local meatworks to see what happens there to animals. Hunting game animals with firearms is the most humane way, to eradicate pests, & to obtain food.
The sport of hunting throughout the world has many benefits, socially, economicly & environmentally.
The only thing that putts guns down are obviously criminals, & anit-gunners. Over-regulating the sport has been proven to be a large waste of time & money.
For example, pistols have been banned in the UK since the Dunnblane shooting, yet there appears to be more & more ilegal pistols, why?
If you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have them. In Australia, there has been thousands of gun crimes since the 1996 Port Arther shootings, but since then, its only been one legal gun owner that has shot some-one other than himself.
Going hunting, is a family sport hear in Australia.
Helps the farmer, the taxpayer, & the environment. Its better to have them hunting, then on the turps.

Jean Bennington wrongly states "the majority of the public dislike blood sports". This is a deliberate falsehood. It is true to say that a large number of urban dwellers who don't know any better dislike blood sports but this is entirley different.
Personally I believe that if you are prepared to eat meat you should be prepared to kill it.

Who is likely to be better trained than Prince William to shoot a stag Howard?
He's been trained by the British Army and is likely therefore to be an excellent shot.
Ken Chadwick, Chorley, England
I suppose you would rather they went out a bought a nice chunk of shrink wrapped venison. As long as it was killed and butchered well out of sight and we didn't have to see it until it was on the shelf that's all okay. Any meat eater who thinks killing animals is wrong or who wouldn't be willing to kill themselves is a hypocrite and an idiot.
Bob, Lodon,
Possibly culls may be necessary for the overall benefit of the animals. But, if so, let it be done professionally and humanely by professionals, not by royals intent on indulging their bloodlust at the taxpayers' expense.
Howard, Milton Keynes,
Jean - I agree with you on Kate's role in blood sports as opposed to Diana - but the royal family is an economic power machine for the UK. It is the glamour, the tradition and the uniqueness of Britain's royalty which attracts so many foreign visitors, and their spending power, to London and the UK.

Of course Kate will have to partake in the Royals' pastime of killing for fun in order to be a member of this motley crew. Diana never took part in blood sports so she was an outsider but had compassion which endured her to the public . If Kate becomes like the rest of the Royals' she wont be popular for the majority of the public dislike blood sports . It's about time we had the choice of voting for a republic .
