LONDON Sir Cliff Richard’s mother has died at the age of 87 after suffering Alzheimer’s disease. Dorothy Webb developed dementia in her early seventies. Last year Sir Cliff, 67, spoke of his pain at watching the disease ravage his mother. “She doesn’t care about what she looks like, she stays in bed,” he told BBC Radio 4. “She is living, but what [Alzheimer’s] does is take away your life.” His father died in 1961. His mother remarried and was later divorced. Sir Cliff became a campaigner for the Alzheimer’s Research Trust.

What I dread as much as the alzheimers itself perhaps ,is having to go into hospital in 25 years or so when this generation are the doctors and nurses . Not all of them I must add.
Simon, London, UK
I feel so sorry to hear that sir cliff richards mum has passed away, my mum passed away on christmas eve 2001 and people say that it will get easier but it never does, i still miss her, i work with Alzheimers sufferers and its really an hard job because they constanally want 24/7 care, they dont know what time of day it is or who the people are when they see them. I feel great sympathy for sir cliff at this sad time.
nothing really prepares you for this.
God bless sir cliff and his mum xx

My heart goes out to Sir Cliff. My mother died having suffered from Alzheimer's and truly nothing can ever prepare you for what this disease does to a loved one: slowly take away every vestige of what made them who they are. The way NHS treats such people - effectively, as too expensive to treat - makes me wonder if anyone at NICE or in the government has ever had someone they love die like this. In my nightmares, I imagine a time when fatal diseases such as cancer have all been cured and everyone over a certain age has Alzheimer's. Maybe they'll pay more notice of it then.

I think the government's treatment of Alzheimers sufferers is appalling and the NHS do not regard this as an illness for commercial reasons because they want to offload the problem because of cost and an increasing number of sufferers. The Social Services just wish to take the money of the poor sufferer in order to pay for their welfare. The benefits system of this country provides litte support for sufferers of this disease. I feel great sympathy for Sir Cliff and his mum it is a terrible thing to see such deterioration I have a similar situation with my mother who is 84. Nothing prepares you for this.
