A Czech lorry driver spent three nights in his cab after his satellite navigation system directed him down a narrow country lane.
The driver, 45, was on his way to pick up a consignment of televisions from a depot in Devon when his 40-tonne articulated lorry became wedged on a sharp bend near Ivybridge. Residents were forced to make lengthy diversions as it was impossible to get past the 50ft (15m) long, 8ft wide lorry.
Yuri Odenhai had tried to ask for directions before following his sat-nav’s guidance but his English was not good enough to make himself understood. His progress was halted by a low overhead pipe and he became stuck when he tried to reverse.
It took several days to release the lorry because the haulage company that owns it did not want to pay for an expensive recovery operation at the weekend.
Eventually, the lorry was towed out by a tractor. Mat Auburn, 19, whose family live within yards of the scene, said that there had been similar sat-nav blunders in the past with delivery lorries becoming stuck in the lane, which is used as a short cut between the A379 and A38.
His family took pity on the stranded driver and invited him in for meals for the three days his lorry was trapped. Mr Auburn said: “The diversion put a few miles on people’s journeys. He had stopped near a house to ask for directions but the woman couldn’t understand him.”
Mr Auburn’s mother, Marina, is Croatian and was able to communicate with the driver. Mrs Auburn and her husband, Tim, a university lecturer, gave the driver breakfast, lunch and dinner and struck up a friendship that they plan to continue.
Mr Odenhai had insisted on spending the nights in his cab rather than finding a bed and breakfast. A spokesman for the Czech haulage company, Kohlman and Hasek, admitted that sat-nav was to blame.

Yes, a road atlas, is a good idea. My satnav sent me down a 'motorway exit' that was a sigle-track road reserved for police cars. And then tried to do the same on the return journey. Arrrgh.

I don't know where in New Jersey you live, but definitely if it had happened where I live he'd have been treated the same. Although I don't know if we would've been able to find someone to translate. Once my mom and I went out shopping for a mattress but it wouldn't fit in the car, so two nice guys offered to follow behind us in their pick-up truck all the way home. People are good!

Whatever happened to the Road Atlas and a bit of common sense?

I wonder how many other countries would allow a lorry to block a road for so long just because the owner did not want to pay a weekend call out charge!!

It wasn't near a city. It was in some beautiful rural countryside, and I have been welcomed by locals - admittedly not in the same circumstances - all over the USA. Some of your cities may be scary, but there are plenty of places where the people are kind to strangers. We loved one small community so much we bought a home there, but I am not saying where it is, for obvious reasons.

Thank heavens for kind hearts. I'm sorry to say that if this had happened near a large city here in "The States," this poor man would have been robbed & had found his truck covered in grafitti & his tires gone, as well as being verbally, & possibly physically accosted for "holding up traffic." On top of those horrors, Mr. Odenhai would have been ridiculed for his lack of using / understanding English. Kindness, such as this fellow enjoyed from the helpful Auburn family , comes far & few between. This simple erroneous situation would have made headlines for becoming a tragedy in most U.S. cities, but was made into something much nicer & beautiful because people took the time to care for another human being. If only everyone were like the Auburns, what a wonderful world this would be.
