The Government was accused today of driving the “last nail in the coffin” of the traditional family with moves to grant gay couples equal parenting rights.
Iain Duncan Smith, a former Conservative leader, spoke out against plans to allow lesbian couples to become joint legal parents of children conceived used donated sperm or eggs. His comments, in an article for the Mail on Sunday, came as the proposals are due to come before the House of Lords in the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill on Monday.
The paper claimed that the Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu would also speak against the Bill, announced in this month’s Queen’s Speech to the dismay of family campaigners, the newspaper claimed.
Mr Duncan Smith called for Parliament to reject the Bill, saying it would remove the requirement for a father.
“Another nail will have been hammered into the coffin of the traditional family,” he wrote. “And another blow will have been struck against fatherhood.
“This move could not have come at a worse time. Just as we are beginning to appreciate the vital role fathers play in the successful upbringing of children, Labour ministers are sending out the utterly wrong signal that fathers don’t matter.”
Dr Evan Harris MP, he Liberal Democrat science spokesman said: “The research evidence is clear that children do well in lesbian households and when brought up by mature solo women who plan their motherhood, so imposing a requirement on clinics to consider the need for a father in such cases is both unjustified and unlawful discrimination.
“To equate lesbian households with so-called 'broken homes', as Iain Duncan-Smith has done, is as ludicrous as his attack on all unmarried couples and the Conservatives’ bizarre wish to impose fathers on lesbian households suggests that some Tories simply don’t understand anything beyond their own traditional backgrounds.”
Ben Summerskill, the chief executive of the gay rights group Stonewall, said the Bill would merely extend a right already available to heterosexuals.
“At a time when three million children in this country are growing up in single-parent households, it seems odd there should be this obsession with a few hundred who have an opportunity to have a second loving parent,” he added.

Children deserve a loving family and safe home enviroment--whether that consists of two parents, one parent or gay parents......give our kids the happy homelife they deserve.

Totally confirms my perspective on the Tories: tossers. Have no consideration for others.

How on earth is this terminating childrens rights to a father Jeff?
The most telling aspect of this debate is the lack of women stamping their feet, spitting out their dummies and saying 'childrens rights to a mother - terminated...' etc. This legislation will also support male gay parents but women aren't moaning about feeling pushed out, and the men upset by this aren't mentioning the children in male gay households being deprived of a mother. Why? Because these men believe fathers matter but mothers don't (because they're just women), they are offended more by the idea that we may be moving away from a patriarchal society and into a more cooperative way of living where men will not have all the power and control and we will all work together to support our children to become well rounded adults.
Rachel, Brum, England
Yet again gay people are being treated in an unfair and bizarre manner. Why is it wrong to allow a child to grow up in a gay family? Single parents, 2.4 children families and gay families all have one thing in common, bringing up a child in a safe and happy home. Does Mr Duncan Smith feel that a child will be harmed by living in a gay household. When will this country drag itself into the year 2007?! Can I add this, why do gay people get treated so badly, no other minority group would be allowed to be written about or spoken about in such a way. I do not single people out becasue of their color, or religion, or disability, so why as a lesbian should I have to read such articles. As long as a child is loved, treated properly and given a wide and varied education, the fact I am gay should mean nothing!
Z Tomalin, Edinburgh, Scotland
Iain Duncan Smith's stance is that if a child being brought up by two women goes through the anguish of losing one parent, whether through illness or accident, that child should also then no longer have the security of its other parent to depend on.
He is putting his desire to drag our nation's morality back into the 19th century ahead of children's well-being and security: so much for David Cameron's caring Conservatives!
Jen, Manchester, England
i agree with Dr Harris to denie lesbians and gay male couples the right to have children is discrimination , even the USA gives second parent adoption why shouldn't we?
sophie durez, leeds,
It is obviously wrong to go down this route which panders to lesbians.I certainly hope that it does not get any further. Why should it??
ab, Northampton,
The sex of the parent is less important than the level and quality of love and support offered to the child. Children need love not convention.
Judith, Arundel, West Sussex
Why is it 'bizarre' to wish to ensure every child has a father who takes an active role in its welfare? If anything, allowing lesbains or gays to bring up children is bizarre, unnatural and disgraceful.
John Austin, London , England
I think it may be Dr Evan Harris who is out of touch with the unspoken views of very many people.
Even if an opinion is very fashionable among the elite, it does not mean that it is right or sensible.
If Dr Harris really believes what he is reported to have said, and if his Party agrees with him, I am reminded once again why I could never vote LibDem. Strange people.

Children's rights to a father - Terminated by the government.
Jeff, Surrey,
I thought that the Tories had moved on from this sort of thing?
