A Frenchman who has earned the nickname 'Spiderman' for scaling many of the world's tallest buildings without ropes was arrested for wasting police time today after clambering up the outside of a nondescript office block in Central London.
Alain Robert, 45, has climbed more than 70 skyscrapers, including the Empire State Building, the Tour Montparnasse and the main tower at Canary Wharf, despite suffering from vertigo and severe disabilities as a result of falls.
Today he chose Portland House, a grey 29-storey block known only as the tallest building in Westminster, for a protest climb on behalf of a climate change campaign.
Hundreds of workers stopped to watch as Robert climbed up the building, which is about two minutes from Victoria station.
Onlookers used phones to take pictures as he reached the top of the office block, having stopped to rest on several window ledges on the way up. There were cheers from the crowd as he waved from the pinnacle of the building.
Police taped off the area and later arrested the Frenchman for criminal damage and wasting police time.
