A pet dog missed the family’s dead cat so much that he dug up his grave and brought the body back into the house.
When Oscar’s owners woke up the next morning they discovered the dog curled up beside Arthur, the late cat, in his basket.
His owners, Robert Bell, 73, and his wife, Mavis, of Wigan, Greater Manchester, believe that the dog had licked the cat clean before falling asleep.
Mr Bell said that the two pets were constant companions. Arthur, who was a large cat, used to help Oscar to climb on to the sofa.
Oscar, an 18-month-old Lancashire Heeler, had watched Mr Bell dig a grave in the garden and then lower the cat into the hole.Mr Bell said: “He had managed to climb out through the cat flap in the night, obviously with the intent to get Arthur back. Bearing in mind that Arthur was a huge cat, Oscar must have used all the strength he could muster.
“Then he pulled him into the basket and went to sleep next to him. Arthur’s coat was gleaming white. Oscar had obviously licked him clean. It must have taken him nearly all night.”
Arthur is now reburied in a secure grave. And Oscar has a new playmate, a kitten called Limpet.

My cat Thomas disappeared a lil over two weeks ago and his brother Tofu is just missing him so much and i just don't know what to do to make him happy. He has been with his brother since birth and its just been so unbearable to see him go from happy to sad.

Poor Oscar! I had a dog that dug up my son's hamster when we buried it years ago. She dug him up and laid him on the back step as if to say "You forgot something!". It was the sweetest thing. I'm so glad that Oscar has a new kitten to ease his grief over his lost friend.
Kathryn, San Antonio, TX
Liz, is missing the whole point; Liz is the perfect example of why dogs will always be mans best friend. Way to go Oscar!
we DIG you! The Ybarra's, SA,TX

No need to clone him. There are hundreds of equally sweet dogs and cats (and other animals, too) in animal shelters who would love to have a home.
A wonderful story of devotion

Animals do mourn. I have been told by my vet that you should let animal friends see and sniff the lost pet so they know that their friend is gone forever. When my pet friends have sadly had to be put down, my vet has always sent a sympathy card.

In my next life I hope to come back as a CAT, and enjoy all 9 lives! Amazing how some people just donât get itâ¦just another reason to love animals moreâ¦how blessed we are to have such gifts to enhance our lives while on this earth! I have never ever heard of a cat or dog being compared to the term MORONâ¦funny how that term is saved for humans, and after reading some of these remarks, can see whyâ¦
Maria, Holcomb, MO
That's so sad. Oscar must have really missed Bell.
I find it so strange that some humans don't understand that nonhuman animals can experience pain and emotions just like we do.
Elaine, New York,
How loyal dogs are. There is the story of a dog that wouldn't leave his masters grave. He returned time after time after having been removed. He never ate nor drank and finally died on the grave.
How many pets cross vast distances to return home.
They forgive and forget easily. They need and give love always, except when treated in such a way as to turn on people. Even that is a type of loyalty to the person who trained it to do so.
CD, Worthington, Ontario, Canada
In theory it is illegal to bury animals in your garden. It is necessary to check with your local council/dog warden. Although highly unlikely that anyone would find out.
Far better to cremate and scatter the ashes.

If Oscar has broken the law, he should face the full force of the same, whether by means of tasers or detention, it doesn't matter. Just because he is no doubt a very cute and adorable canine, doesn't mean he should be let off with just a warning ("No!, Bad boy!").
We need to celebrate species diversity yes, but we are all equal before the law.
Marion Pelmer, London,
If I dug the missus up I'd be arrested.
Animals have more rights than we do...
Tks!

It's great to be reminded that you Brits are as fond of your critters as we Yanks. We have 3 cats and 2 dogs, all of whom co-exist peacefully.
I'm glad that because Oscar is so young, the Bells decided to find him a new best buddy.
Linda Drescher, Golden, Colorado
That is so touching, and I'm so happy to read that Oscar has a new friend :0)
Kate, Stafford,
Cute for a dog and cat -- would have been pretty damn creepy if people!

...and the comment from Liz of Bristol illustrates why animals make better companions than people !
They don't worry about sensibilities where loyalty is concerned.
Well done Oscar.
Rob, Boston, UK
What a touching story! Any pets I've lost have always been layed out for their 'friends' to see and say their goodbyes. It may help --- Oscar may have thought Arthur was in trouble. Good luck with the new kitty. Truly a wonderful story -- Just shows animals have feelings, and plenty of them!
Suzie, McComb, USA MS
One of the most touching things I have heard, beautiful.

I had two 9 yr old cats both from the same litter. One of them, sadly, was run over and killed in August. His brother mourned for 2 months, it was heartbreaking. We have now got him a new friend. A ferocious little kitten who adores his new big brother. My old, cat seems a lot happier and even plays with the kitten, but he's still not his old self. It's sad, but so sweet that he seems to remember his brother still.
And it's certainly not 'gross' to bury your beloved deceased furry friends in your garden where you can sit and remember them. Just put somthing over the spot (Zuko's marker' is a large ceramic planter filled with flowers).
Ellie Parker, Norwich, UK
My cat and my dog have exactly the same age and have been friends ever since we've had them. I must remember it for when the time comes...
Thanks for sharing this beautiful story.
Nadine, Paris,
''Its really gross to bury pets in your garden. A fox could have dug that cat up and left chewed up body parts all over the lawn. Not nice. ''
There is always one negative person who doesn't get it, isn't there? I pity you.
Oliver, Leeds, UK
He'd never get MY old cat, Freddie - he's the only cat buried on the top of Table Mountain!

"Cats best friend." Another slant to "Mans Best Friend."

But where else would you bury them if not your garden?
phill, sheffield,
That dog is a jewel... Someone should clone HIM instead of flocks of sheep, etc. I could use an Oscar in my life.
Elan Durham, Santa Monica, CA/US
There are human beings who do not treat oneanother with this much sentiment.
Dedication is such an admiabl trait, no matter what species it occours in.

Yup, that made me cry. Poor dog!!
