Diana, Princess of Wales, was condemned by her mother as a disgraceful “whore” who was messing around with Muslim men, the inquest into her death heard today.
Paul Burrell, the Princess’s former butler, told the High Court that he had been allowed to listen into a telephone call where Frances Shand Kydd rounded on her daughter for having a relationship Hasnat Khan, a Pakistani consultant cardiologist.
Mr Burrell repeatedly resisted attempts by Michael Mansfield, QC, counsel for Mohamed Al Fayed, to reveal what the Princess's mother had said during the telephone call in June 1997, saying: “Respectfully, that’s not very kind to a lady who is no longer here."
Mr Mansfield, however, pressed him a number of times, saying: “You do realise this is an important issue for the jury,” as the former butler looked anxious and tapped his pen on the witness box.
It was only when the coroner, Judge Lord Justice Scott Baker, intervened and said to him: “This is relevant” that Mr Burrell said: “Well she called the Princess a whore and she said that she was messing around with f****** Muslim men and she was disgraceful and said some very nasty things."
It was this telephone conversation, Mr Burrell admitted, that prompted the Princess to sever links with her mother, who has since died.
The exchange came after Mr Burrell was questioned by Mr Mansfield about the Princess’s mother who he said “had expressed herself in extremely forceful terms about Diana’s consorts especially if they were Muslim”.
Earlier, Mr Burrell had said that Diana never wanted to marry Dodi Fayed but had considered a secret marriage to Mr Khan, 48.
The former butler added that, before the couple had split up, there had been plans for the consultant cardiologist to move into the Princess's residence at Kensington Palace.

Letters may prove that Diana had indeed speculated that an attempt may be made on her life involving a car crash.
However, if she truly believed this then she would have worn a seatbelt.
End of story.

It is sad that the old english attitudes remain.....well Britain is not so Great...and neither are her people...I am sure Muslims feel the same way about consorting with English peerage who are full of illegal born children and riled with homosexuality and other barbaric intimate practices...

Its amazing that a woman who abandoned her family to run off with another man would find a basis to criticise her daughter's behaviour even as deplorable as that might have been. Princess Diana, however, was like her mother in this one respect: She always placed her own happiness and self-satisfaction above that of her nation. The monarchy is a precious symbol of the British state and should always be held up as as such, even if this means discomfort and heartache. Besides, Princess Diana would be no one unless she had been the daughter-in-law of the monarch, something she all too often seemed ungratefully to forget.

Does Qasim Khan have the same view about Britney Spears and Mr Ghalib? I feel it rascist that Mr Ghalib's family will only speak to him again and welcome the relationship if she converts to Islam. The media continually portrays the fact that the Muslim community does not favourably tolerate marriage outside their religion as entirely acceptable, whereas for Christians, the same thing is considered to be rascist. How many Christians, Hindu's or Sikhs (white or black) are permitted to date muslim girls by their parents and family, and are welcomed into the Muslim household without the pressure to convert to Islam? I doubt it is a great deal! This discussion should not be limited to being anti-muslim, the issue is common through each religious group in the UK.
Mrs Kydd's comments could be considered rascist, but we must hold everyone to account by the same rules. If her views are contemptable, then so is the Ghalib's family's stance and those others holding the same view.
Neil, Birmingham,
Come on Qasim, be realistic and don't be soft! Muslims don't get great press especially after 11/9, 7/7, Osama Bin Laden and the extremists who seem to be making life difficult for an every day British Muslim. And I understand that generalising within society causes endless problems and harassment for your community. Yes, Diana's mother was probably racist and against her daughter dating a Muslim. Many women would agree that Islam is a sexist religion? Perhaps this is the reason and not race. Either way, everyone wants peace and what Diana's ancient mother said (now I'm being ageist) is probably just the the comments of a nutty, protective mother with very old school and fashioned views. As Ray said, it's irrelevant to the case and it's just the media again stirring up a reaction.
Sarah, London,
Qasim Khan must take heart and listen to Joe from Edinburgh who is talking sense.
Mrs Shand Kydd was obviously a racist who was not in tune with her daughter's thoughts and feelings - a very sad situation.

And this coming from the woman who abandoned her own children when Diana was only six years old! What cheek.

One cannot help wondering how this would have panned out if one or the other of them had worn a seatbelt, or if they both had. That has got more to do with the cause of death than what Diana's mother said to her in private.

With Reference to MikeM, this inquest is supposed to identify motive(s), if any. The Attitudes & Conduct of People are linked to Motive(s). It is a pity FSK is not alive today, to explain the reasoning behind her disgusting comments at the inquest but also her education. Somewhat convenient.... Perhaps her associates who are alive today, with her education could explain instead.
Given that such comments are often made behind closed doors and not in the public domain and sometimes attitudes are consequently converted into violence, one can not ignore the relevance of Religion in this inquest.
Rachel Hamilton, Manchester, England
Diana could have had affairs with Muslims, Jews, Christians, Mourmons, Moonies... you name it! But what would ANY of those affairs prove towards a conspiracy to murder/assassinate??? Her private life should remain private and we should look at the EVIDENCE that tells us about a conspiracy to murder/assassinate. As there is no evidence, there was obvioulsy no conspriacy! Her mother's comments, The D of E's opinion or anyone else's opinion prove NOTHING.
Was she going to marry Dodi? Whether she intended to or not proves absolutely NOTHING towards a conspiracy!
Do her affairs and 'speculated' marraige to Dodi prove HOW she died??? I wont dignify that with my opinion!
Where are the facts? I thought that this inquest was to show HOW she died and i think we all know.... it was a tragic car accident. My advice to Mr Al Fayed is to get over it. Accidents happen and your 'empire' does not make you immune!
IF there was a conspiracy then that should be a seperate inquest.

To Qasim Khan I would not worry about what the top of British hierarchy actually think as they definitely do not represent the majority of Britain's who simply go about their lives. The political classes likewise are completely out of touch with the general population.
When you travel all over the world you see different peoples, cultures and religions and one thing is common; you get good and bad in every community.
There would be a lot less tension if the Muslim community went out of their way to integrate more as once you see the good people it is an awful lot harder to have negative preconceptions.
I look forward to the day when racism is ended both negative and positive as we humans would have turned a very larger corner.
joe, Edinburgh, Scotland
How realistic was a 'secret' marriage to Mr.Khan ? I don't doubt the UK media would have been willing to collude and go along with it, but what about the international press and media ? Fantasy !
Jon, North West, UK
As a mere peasant I had presumed that this Inquest was intended to determine the cause of death of 3 people in a fatal high-speed car crash, rather than a general 'washing of linen' in public.
I do not care to hear the opinions of Tom, Dick or Harry; or even Diana's mother, for that matter, on a victim's past life.
Presumably we will next have to endure a saga of Dodi's past life since he must have annoyed a good few people too, with his father's money talking, and his film contacts.
Imagine, if they had all been wearing seat-belts then MI 5,6,7 or 8, and all the Duke of Edinburgh's 'dark forces' effort would have been thwarted; just an insurance claim for a big car.
The trouble is that only mortals have accidents, not Al Fayed's son.
MikeM, St. Albans, England
The biggest political big bang of all time will be the next coronation. Compare it with the last coronation, which took place less than ten years after victory in WWII, yet before the dissolution of the British Empire, and you will see that the massive social changes that have taken place since then will put a question mark, in terms of public reaction, over the whole scenario of the next one.
The death of Diana, Princess of Wales, in a Paris road accident - whatever the causes - simply served to underline the failure of her marriage to HRH The Prince of Wales, and has added to public concern about the whole affair. As a result, HRH Prince Charles now has a very different public image from that of his mother in the early 1950's.
So the question arises: what are the people of the UK doing to prepare for constitutional big bang that will take place when HM The Queen dies?
Edmund Burke, Kingston upon Thames, England
Sounds like Romeo and Juliet all over. Two families at war.

They are very inappropriate comments to make however how many Muslim familys would allow a Christian to marry a Muslim without converting and im sure many comments have been made by the family when that happens
Tony, Liverpool, England
come on.... who really cares?
toby johnson, hastings,
As muslim born and bread in this country, I find these remarks extremly distasteful and racist. It makes me sometimes wonder if the majority of this country feels the same way but my heart tells me otherwise. The main issue concerning me is these are the true feelings of the top of british hierarchy so imagine what the rest of the populations attitudes towards muslims are. As a minority group in this country, i feel even more isolated more than ever even after all the " anti-islamist phobia " around at the moment. I can only hope that one day, sooner rather than later, we can put our differences aside and live in peace as we all are of the same kind.
Qasim Khan, bradford, west yorkshire
From his evidence, it appears the Princess was unable to make any decisions in her life without Burrell's consent. He gave the impression that she was too dense to make up her own mind.
However, I do think that the Princes always were and would have continued to be the "hub" of the Princess's life should she have survived.
Mrs. Shand Kydd's racist remarks were quite inappropriate and irrelevant to the case.
Ray Ellis, London,
This affair has brought sadness all round, even to the general public who loved her as they love all pretty women. However, opinions have already been formed and in some cases nothing on earth will change their minds, even with absolute proof. In this case there is no absolute proof either way so the story will continue ad infinitum.
We can only say Diana and Dodi Rest in peace.
