FORT WILLIAM The cycling world was in mourning yesterday after Jason MacIntyre, one of the sport’s brightest hopes for the Beijing Olympics, died after a collision with a van in the Scottish Highlands.
MacIntyre, 34, the triple British champion, was on a training run on the A82 nine miles from his home in Fort William on Tuesday afternoon when the accident happened. He was airlifted to a nearby hospital, where he died from his injuries.
He has been enjoying the most successful spell of his career as a time-trial cyclist and his death came only a day after he learnt that he had been given funding to train for the 2010 Commonwealth Games as a potential medallist.
Northern Constabulary said that a man aged 35 had been reported to prosecutors over the accident, which occurred at about 1.30pm on Tuesday on the A82 near Spean Bridge.
Bryan Smith, a former Scotland cycling manager, said: “He was the best road cyclist in Scotland and as good as anyone in Britain. He was in the prime of his career.”
